Acquired Book By: Interestingly, I was first contacted in November, 2021 by Mr Wygal’s publicist about his Myrtle Beach Mysteries – however, I was a bit delayed in responding until March, 2022. It took a bit of time to receive the first two books in the series by Mr Wygal and then, I had a few delays of my own this Summer, 2022. He also sent me a copy of “Death Washes Ashore” the second book in the series which is when I realised I needed a copy of the prequel “The Brass Key” in order to better understand the sequencing of the series itself.

I had fully planned to read all the stories shortly thereafter in Autumn of 2022 however, my migraines returned in September and from October 2022 – February 2023 my family and I had gone through over 90+ days of loss (two cats) and medical emergencies with my father who had multiple hospitalisations and stays until he was finally able to be released into a 24/7 nursing care home where he could receive rehab and recovery. Ergo, my readings of this series were delayed due to circumstances rather than anything else which would have delayed me from reviewing the series. I posted my review last year for Death on the Boardwalk and The Brass Key (February, 2023). Whilst Spring 2023 involved an unplanned relocation and a search for a second job – you could say it has been an incredible ride since then juggling two jobs and life outside of work. My blog hasn’t been as updated as regularly as it used to be due to all these different circumstances, but I am coming back strong this Summer, 2024. Whilst I took a short hiatus from reading this series, two more installments have released and a third (book eight) will be releasing October, 2024.

This is another prime example of how publicists and authors alike read through my Review Policy and note the kind of stories I love to seek out to read. Quite a few of the requests I receive are a bit of a miss for me as a reader as they fall outside the realms of what I will accept as a reader or outside my review policy altogether. This is why I left the tweet in my sidebar to alert those seeking reviewers to know this is why we write those pages on our blogs – to help authors, publishers and publicists know our reading sensibilities and preferences. I am celebrating the authors, publishers and publicists today who kindly read those pages and offer us a story we can accept for review consideration.

I received a complimentary copy of “Death Washes Ashore” direct from the author Caleb Wygal in exchange for an honest review. I did not receive compensation for my opinions or thoughts shared herein.

What I am enjoying about The Myrtle Beach Mysteries:

First off: I would definitely recommend reading the prequel The Brass Key ahead of Death on the Boardwalk because it sets such a lovely tone of entrance into the expanding series as much as Peggy and Mark are the kind of characters which endear you to them quite immediately and leave a mark of joy on your heart.

Wygal set a delightful tone of entrance into this Myrtle Berach Mysteries within his prequel of The Brass Key which also laid out the towne itself and gave us a warm entrance of place and setting. However, moreso than even that, I appreciated the chance to get to know Peggy and Mark, as through their own adventure in the towne, it opened the door to meet Clark ahead of his own purposeful position within the series, as well. Wygal has a dry wit about him and writes humour into the backbone of his Cosy series in a way that feels both modern and contemporary at the same time. He isn’t overly comedic either – which gives his series a refreshing voice and style.

The pacing of the series is wonderfully slow-brewing – to where you can settle into the atmosphere of the setting and appreciate where Wygal leads you to traverse through his version of Myrtle Beach. I had to smirk though a bit about the ‘golf car lifestyle’ images because that was something I had previously become familiar with in other stories as well as through travelling to different areas which have far more carts than cars! Laughs. Wygal gently touches on the background of his series setting whilst keeping the focus shifting forward through Clark (his main character) and the persons who interact with Clark as well. From their vantage points, we retreat closer to what is suspending itself behind the evolving mystery whilst gaining a bit more traction into getting our bearings about the community, too.

There is a light-heartedness to this series as much as there is just enough drama percolating in the background to draw your attention forward, too. I found myself delighted in reading the series – from the prequel into the first installment due to how light of a read they were and how enjoyable they were to read, too. Sometimes you want lighter fare in your readerly life and these fit that category brilliant for me. They also were a great transition back into reading after months of non-reading due to personal circumstances affecting my family, too.

I believe this would be a wicked Cosy series for the Cosy Mystery reader who wants to soak into the beachy atmosphere whilst endeavouring to walk alongside Clark and perhaps pick up on the clues as he does whilst potentially connect the dots just ahead of Clark, too! It was a lovely reprieve from reading harder hitting Cosy Crime dramas and I am eager to dive into Death Washes Ashore!

On being delightfully Cosy for Cosy:

For readers who are worried about descriptive scenes within Cosy Mysteries, this series is delightfully cosy for cosy – meaning, you don’t have to worry about descriptive crime scenes. The very first crime scene experience happens in the opening chapter(s) and Wygal shares less depiction of that scene than other Cosy Mystery authors which makes this a very gently told Cosy and a new spin on how you can lead a hearty Mystery without depicting violence.

Happy #RomanceTuesdays feat. a #LoveInspired Book Review | “The Beekeeper Next Door” by Danielle Thorne

#RomanceTuesdays badge created by Jorie in Canva.

Acquired Book By: In (2020) Ms Thorne contacted me about her first Love Inspired novel (“His Daughter’s Prayer”) of which I reviewed and hosted her during @SatBookChat. Fast forward to 2022 and I caught a notice about her review team which led me to asking her about joining the team. I was delighted to receive her second release with Love Inspired as I had fondly remembered the joy I had in reading her debut with the publisher. I was grateful I could join her review team knowing how much I love her writing instincts for telling Contemporary INSPY Romantic stories as much as the fact I love reading stories by this publisher for Romantic Suspense.

I received a complimentary copy of “The Beekeeper Next Door” direct from the author Danielle Thorne in exchange for an honest review. I did not receive compensation for my opinions or thoughts shared herein. Per the badge at the end of this review, I am also a member of the author’s Review Team. All promo materials for this novel were provided by the author herself and are used with permission.

On why I love reading Love Inspired Contemporary:

I have been an appreciator of reading gently told relationship-based Romances for years now as it was a co-joined interest of my Mum and me. This goes back to the days where you could receive a subscription by mail for the Heartsong Presents stories? And, this predates Love Inspired in though as time shifted forward, Love Inspired took over this niche of interest. Originally there were three different types of Love Inspired, too, Contemporary, Historical and Suspense. The first and latter lasted the longest but they occasionally bring back the Historicals.

I took a bit of a hiatus from reading the Contemporaries by Love Inspired (LI) and opted to focus on the authors under their Suspense line instead. A journey which led to a look of book gathering at libraries and hearty discussion with Mum about the characters, the series and the different styles of the writers behind the books. I’m not sure when I decided to take a chance on reading the Contemporaries again, but shortly after I did, I discovered the collective works of Danielle Thorne through my adventures as a book blogger and that led me into being a part of her Review Team.

I’m hoping to be featuring more LI authors this year on my blog, as I have another lovely sequencing of stories by an LI author I haven’t had the pleasure to read in full yet and as I’m keenly interested in keep LI in my life more full-time again, I look forward to seeing where the months led me as I journey back into imprint of choice. The main reasons I love reading the Contemporaries or the Suspense novels by LI is the backbone of the stories include elements of faith whilst living, strong realistic characters, beautiful settings and more times than not and small townes whose communities are just as important as the lead and supporting characters. I love relationship-based romances (both mainstream and faith-based) and the LI romances are an uplift of joy to read due to how their nearly always slow-burns except for the occasional one wherein the characters had a more insta-connection to each other but still, their romance had to develop and blossom through the central arc of their story, too.

My pursuit of LI is in conjunction with my Mum’s and it has become a lovely co-tradition of ours to continue to seek out these lovely authors whilst sharing our joy and affection for their stories as they continue to draw us into the lives of their characters.

Hallo, Hallo Summer!

With such a hard start to my reading this year,

Summer is proving to be the season of renewing my bookish life. I’m off to a brilliant start, too and I can’t wait to share with you all the lovely stories which are happily being consumed!

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.com

For those who have been following my readerly adventures on Jorie Loves A Story for the better part of the last decade (can you BELIEVE this is my 11th year of book blogging?) — you know, I am typically the girl who DEVOURS stories – in all shapes and sizes – as well as floating between print and audiobook (at least since 2016!). And, yet, for the last few years my readerly life has suffered quite a bit and my blogging life has dwindled down quite a heap as well. A lot of those changes are credited to IRL challenges and adversities – as well as a lot of LIFE happening behind the blog, too.

To my credit, I haven’t lost the interest to read but rather circumstances have prevented me from reading for most of [2023 and 2024] which was explained in quite a lot of detail on #TheSundayPost. As I start to sort out where I want to resume my readings and listenings – I decided the best way was to start with small goals and ideally move forward into a long-term goal of mine which has been to focus on #MyYASummer (ie. stories featuring YA stories across genres interesting me to read) whilst adding in some wicked good Middle Grade stories, too. As I will be curating a particular concentration of stories – it will be a Summer of new discoveries and reading the stories I’ve ached to read for quite a long time now. While at the same time, I have other stories I’ve slated to be read before Summer ends – from Romance to Thrillers to Mysteries and a lot of lovely routes of genre betwixt and between!

Ideally I’d like to think I can maintain updating my readings through weekly #WWWednesdays but if I happen to miss a week or two, just know I’m still sorting out the balance between work and life outside of work. Laughs. I am sure I am not alone in that quest! Oy. Today I felt I’d start by focusing on the fact I have two new reviews up on my blog and more are coming soon (maybe even before the close of the weekend?!) into next week, too. Here’s to find my way back into STORIES and happily enjoying regenerating new chapters of engagement both on my blog and on my #bookstagram feeds, too.

I’ve been happily receiving some lovely offers of review consideration recently on my blog and one of those lovely authors who reached out to me was Ms Chan. She has written a wicked lovely Middle Grade novel called: The Legendary Mo Seto about a a young girl who is a new heroine to adventure after as we pursue the truths of her family and how much courage it takes to overcome any challenge that crosses your path. She’s into martial arts which interested me as I am as well IRL though I haven’t pursued it in a long time. I loved the sound of the novel and although I initially started reading it as soon as it arrived in early June, between work and my injury, I lost hours to continue reading it until now. I can’t wait to dive back in as I know it will be read in a few sittings as its wicked good! Be sure to watch for my review forthcoming over the next week. I also announced this lovely new book via #bookstagram.

On returning to reading Love Inspired Contemporary & Suspense:

I had indeed planned to return to reading Ms Thorne’s novels and more Love Inspired stories quite regularly last year – around the time this novel arrived actually as I was trying to resettle into a regular rhythm of reading both Love Inspired Contemporary and Love Inspired Suspense. I share an affinity for the Suspense line of stories with my Mum and we oft will tag-team reading them together. We love having conversations about the different authors’ styles and the lives of the characters we meet against the pages. Those are wicked lovely adventures we take-on together but in respect to reading Ms Thorne’s novels, I simply lost my focus with reading last year and reluctantly had to admit I needed more time to re-pursue reading her lovely stories. The best difference this year has been the addition of Progressive lens in my life which is allowing me to have a bit more freedom when it comes to reading. My migraines have also reduced as part of their frequency last year were due to having issues with my vision. That isn’t the main cause of my chronic migraines but it was causing additional ones to occur and blessedly that has been nipped in the bud so to speak.

I’ve longed to resettle into both Love Inspired and Ms Thorne’s novels for two key reasons: a wicked uplift of inspirational joy to read and I’ve missed the spiritual threads of story interwoven with realistic characters living lives you want to become a part of as a reader. I’ve missed reading overall and now I have a new beginning with reading being able to see the words again with my new glasses. It feels like a restorative blessing this year for me to recapture a bit of the time I’ve lost and begin anew. I look forward to reading three of her stories back-to-back as well – as I have this lovely from last Spring, a Christmas one from last November and of course, her latest release The Beekeeper Next Door which I’ll be featuring next Sunday! Be sure to revisit with me in July as I will be featuring The Doctor’s Christmas Dilemma as a bit of Christmas in July. I have a few other stories planned within this same theme of context, too.

Overall, it is shaping up to being a lovely Summer – full of Romance, a few Christmas reads, Young Adult and Middle stories, a good dose of Fantasy, a wicked Suspense or Thriller thrown in for good measure and dash of Inspirational stories. I can’t wait to see how Summer continues to enliven my readerly life with the stories I’m choosing to read right now.

On why I enjoy reading stories by Danielle Thorne:

Thorne is one of the authors I appreciate reading because she carries a thread of relatability through her stories and her vision of her characters’ lives. I appreciate the topics she broaches through her stories but also, rooting us in the real world through her perception of what her characters can live through as she tells their story. Yet is how she visually places you into the setting which grabs your eye the most – being well-travelled through the Southeast, I knew of the route Thorne took to place us into this small towne of Southern Georgia. She even graced the setting with small touches of personalised observations seen through Claire’s description of arriving into Kudzu Creek (not my favourite name of a towne!).

There is a lot to unpack in this Contemporary Romance – especially the timeline of when Dori had Emily and when Claire took over her guardianship which is an interesting twist in the novel when you consider who the father is to Emily. I felt Thorne was doing a great job leading us into the quagmire of unearthing the past which connected both the timeline of her story but also with the events connecting all the central characters together. It is an interesting history of course and as those connections come to surface for the reader, it was lovely to see the revelations which meant the most to the characters took a bit more time to become disclosed.

Thorne approached referencing the faith centering her characters lives in a very subtle way. Bradley mentioned it whilst talking to his cousin Donovan in regards to how he changed his life for the better and how his faith is important to him even more now than it was in the past. This subtle way of inclusion worked best for the plot as both Bradley and Claire were at the start of new beginnings for the trajectory of their lives. She needed to prove to herself she could be self-sufficient and raise a daughter whilst Bradley was trying to make a name for himself as a historic restorator of homes.

For a slow-brewing romance what was more disheartening were the dramas unfolding behind the romance itself – especially when it concerned Bradley’s parents. Thorne did a wonderful job at showing how strict and reserved parents can become when they are blinded by their own influence on their children’s lives. I felt she handled that part of the story with as much grace as she could as a writer owning to the realism of what people have to contend with given similar circumstances. in the background of course is this lovely community – where neighbours and community members are the found family you never knew you were seeking but were thankful to have within your inner circle. It was also the kind of place you could start over and determine for yourself the kind of life you wanted to live and that was the best message of all.

A Romantic Summer | celebrating the novel: “Their Surprise Island Wedding” (Hawaiian Reunions series, Book Two) by Anna J. Stewart

Romantic Summer graphic made by Jorie in Canva.

Acquired Book By: Whilst speaking with Ms Stewart about being a guest on @SatBookChat in the New Year of 2021 (as our conversation was in late 2020) – I realised there was a whole collection of stories by her I haven’t yet had the pleasure of reading! The first series which charmed my heart was Butterfly Harbour – which we happily discussed during #SatBookChat in January, 2021 and it is the series I am continuing to read throughout 2023. At the time, she mentioned to me she also writes for Harlequin’s Romantic Suspense and I was quite curious about those stories as I regularly read their Love Inspired Suspense novels. The key difference between the two is Love Inspired is their faith-based imprint and the Romantic Suspense stories are Contemporary and mainstream. I tend to be a hybrid reader of both mainstream and faith-based markets which is why I was keen on reading her Romantic Suspense releases.

I am a member of her Review Team (as you will see the badge I created at the bottom of this review) and I am thankful I have the opportunity to be clued into her new releases and series, as they become published and available to read. I will be continuing to read her Heartwarming and Contemporary Suspense releases via Harlequin as a Review Team member, too.

I received a complimentary copy of “Their Surprise Island Wedding” direct from the author Anna J. Stewart in exchange for an honest review. I did not receive compensation for my opinions or thoughts shared herein.

Hallo, Hallo dear hearts!

You might recognise the author I am reading (ie. Anna J. Stewart) as I first became introduced to her style of storycrafting whilst reading the #BlackwellBrothers series via Harlequin Heartwarming! Whilst continuing to get to know her further through her guest appearances on @SatBookChat (the Saturday chat I’ve hosted since 2014 celebrating Romance, Women’s Fiction & Feminist Lit and of which is on sabbatical). You’ll find me reading selections from her Romantic Suspense stories for Harlequin as well as her wicked lovely series ‘Butterfly Harbour’ which is a celebration of family, community and new beginnings!

Settling into a Heartwarming novel felt like the right choice for me. Whenever I pick up one of these lovelies, I feel as if I can just soak into a story, relax into the lives of the characters and settle the chaos for a bit. We all need those moments to ourselves where we can just find ways to decompress and find what can relax us outside of work and life’s commitments.

One of the hardest things to reconcile about returning to Nalani for me was to emotionally put aside what happened to Hawaii IRL. As the fires in Hawaii erased an entire towne and caused so much heartache and devastation. My heart was already anchoured to Hawaii through the first novel in this series Her Island Homecoming – both through reading the story itself and through recounting my experiences with the characters, on my blog and in IRL with conversations with my Mum. Part of me couldn’t find a way to get past the news coming out of Hawaii (post-fire) and find a path back into being in the right mindset to resume reading the series. Thereby, I set the book aside and hoped I could reconcile what happened and find my joy again in reading the series which gave me such an uplift as a reader and as a blogger. Sometimes real life can affect how and what we choose to read, and, in this instance, my heart was just full of emotional anguish and grief for those people who survived the horrific whilst my sympathies were extended to those who perished.

And, of course, right when my heart and mind were re-aligning together to emerge back into a beloved series like this one, my work life became quite taxing and with the extra hours I was picking up, I found myself unable to unwind into a book, as I was genuinely too exhausted to do anything else than catch-up on some much-needed rest and sleep. Thereby, this review was meant to be read and reviewed closer to when I received it as I was so happy about the books I received around Christmas by this author – but I had to carry it over into the New Year. A lot of my absences online and on my blog were due to needing Progressive glasses which blessedly has also been resolved as I now have two pairs of glasses: a main pair of Progressives and a pair of readers, which in effect is changing my life! I spoke about this during the last couple of Sunday Posts, as well.

Around March/April, I felt I could finally start to resume reading, blogging, reviewing and becoming more active on #bookstagram as I had put in the groundwork towards that goal in late Autumn. However, Spring proved to be a bit more than Mum and I had expected. Our car needed repairs in March and by April we both fell horridly ill and I had to take nearly a full week off from both my jobs and resume working before I was fully recovered as I couldn’t afford to lose any more hours at either of them. I barely remember April as a result. By May, I was recovered but it was a month where my Dad had more bad days than good. It was also the month of my parents’ milestone anniversary and it just proved to be a hard ending to Spring.

This lovely review and the times in which I spent reading the book – marks my return to Jorie Loves A Story and regular posts arriving each month throughout the course of 2024! I might have had a rocky start to 2024, but I am hopeful this year provides me a new passageway back into reading but also, a joyful respite from work and a continuing adventure into seeking out the stories which are calling me to read them. I look forward to sharing my thoughts and ruminations as always as much as I look forward to aligning myself back into series by favourite authors across genres of interest and in finding my route through literature during my 11th year as a book blogger! My 10th year might not have been the best, but I have a wicked good feeling this year will be on that will be bookishly delightful in both stories and memories alike – here’s to a lovely New Year of reads for us all.

Meanwhile, I have a lot of anticipation of excitement for this series because of the lovely way in which Ms Stewart has started to set-up the background on the characters but also, the series overall – as she’s opened a few doors that can be explored later and there are plenty of characters of whom I’d love to see continued to become developed and have stories of their own! That’s the bigger blessing with stories of this nature – you get to re-find reasons why the series renews your joy and your own curiosities about what happens after you finish each installment!
