Acquired Audiobook By: I started to listen to audiobooks in [2016] as a way to offset my readings of print books whilst noting there was a rumour about how audiobooks could help curb chronic migraines as you are switching up how your reading rather than allowing only one format to be your bookish choice. As I found colouring and knitting agreeable companions to listening to audiobooks, I have embarked on a new chapter of my reading life where I spend time outside of print editions of the stories I love reading and exchange them for audio versions. Through hosting for the Audiobookworm I’ve expanded my knowledge of authors who are producing audio versions of their stories whilst finding podcasters who are sharing their bookish lives through pods (ie. AudioShelf and Talking Audiobooks; see my sidebar). Meanwhile, I am also curating my own wanderings in audio via my local library who uses Overdrive for their digital audiobook catalogue whilst making purchase requests for audio CDs. It is a wonderful new journey and one I enjoy sharing – I am hoping to expand the percentage of how many audios I listen to per year starting in 2018.

Why I wanted to listen to ‘Mourning Dove’:
I have the tendency of appreciating stories set within the framework of either Southern Lit or Southern Gothic categories. There is a ease of setting and each of these stories has their own particular tone of inclusion. Southern stories reach into that void between the historical past everyone is quite familiar with and the contemporary side of where the South has attempted to outgrow its own roots.
I had previously listened to a story (Next Stop Chancey) and felt this might be as enjoyable as that one had been as it is a rambling story focused on on singular family.

Acquired Book By: I started hosting with Prism Book Tours at the end of [2017], having noticed the badge on Tressa’s blog (Wishful Endings) whilst I was visiting as we would partake in the same blog tours and/or book blogosphere memes. I had to put the memes on hold for several months (until I started to resume them (with Top Ten Tuesday) in January 2018). When I enquiried about hosting for Prism, I found I liked the niche of authors and stories they were featuring regularly. I am unsure how many books I’ll review for them as most are offered digitally rather than in print but this happily marks one of the blog tours where I could receive a print book for review purposes. Oft-times you’ll find Prism Book Tours alighting on my blog through the series of guest features and spotlights with notes I’ll be hosting on behalf of their authors.
This particular review is slightly different from my regular blog tours and hosting features for Prism Book Tours – as an opportunity came along this Summer to secure a spot on a ‘review tour’ rather than a ‘blog tour’ for a five-book series from Harlequin Heartwarming entitled “Return of the Blackwell Brothers”. This differs as each of the reviewers and book bloggers who are committing to this review tour are posting at different intervals as each of the five novels release which is also co-dependent on the format we are signed on to review. As you know, I can only review books released into print and/or audiobook formats (as due to my chronic migraines I am unable to read books in ebook formats) – therefore, I am happily signed on to read four of the five novels in paperback. I am going to attempt to secure a copy of the one book I won’t be sent but I am unsure if I can therefore, I’m thankful to receive four out of five for this special review tour.
My reviews will be showcased from August through December 2018 beginning with this first novel by Carol Ross. Only this first novel will showcase the book synopsis, author photograph and her biography as the rest of the tour will only feature the serial information which is also seen on this post. Each of us had the flexibility to choose when we are posting our reviews which was another added bonus to this particular review tour. I elected to post mine on Saturdays, as for the past four years Saturdays have been happily focused on Romances (previously strictly by ChocLit) and I am going to continue to expand this featured part of the week encompassing more Romances by both ChocLit and different publishers.

Reading this synopsis reminded me of “The Nanny Express” on Hallmark Channel? You might have seen it – where Dean Stockwell is terminally ill and his daughter is trying to get through University by working as a nanny for hire? She rides the bus whilst reading (never without a book in hand!) whilst the main caregiver for her critically ill father and still finds the time to turn around the lives of two grieving children who lost their Mum prematurely! They were rascals!! They found every which way to Sunday to upturnt the apple cart on each of their ‘nannies’ until they met her of course! Where not even a rat would make her blink or shrink away!!
I honestly can’t wait to read what these two cheeky girls will attempt to do to their new ‘nanny’!! Meanwhile, the other tv movie it brought happy memories of was from Fox Family but the titles are eluding me! It was a series of three films, where the children can’t believe how attached they become to their new nanny and truly find happiness with her in their lives for the first time! Speaking of which, ‘The Nanny Express’ stars Brennan Elliott, of whom I happily have admired since his days on ‘Strong Medicine’ whilst he is now a leading man on Hallmark Channel for the movie series ‘All of my Heart’ as the third ‘All of My Heart: the Wedding’ is in production! (you might have seen me tweeting tonight!) (you might have also caught his REPLY!)

Why I was inspired to read Escapement:
It goes without saying, I love reading a diversely original ensemble of stories – I’ve made it rather plain these past five years I’ve been blogging how keen I am to soak into different genres & literary stylings as much as the fact I love regularly reading stories between traditionally published authors & the Indie side of the ledger as I personally have an Indie mindset myself. Likewise, I also appreciate reading LGBTQ+ literature and stories which breakaway from the regular offerings to give us something new to experience – whether it is a new timescape or a bent of genre(s). I love the eclectic nature of my reading life which constantly challenges me, re-defines the ways in which I interpret the world & enlarges my joy of being open to where the stories lead me to travel.
Each story is a capsule of a time – thereby, I am time travelling everytime I step within the pages of a novel or a story – if the length is shorter than the standard novel. Being a traditional reader of both print & audiobooks has given me new horizons to seek out – which is one reason I am looking forward to hearing more of this audiobook narrated by a full cast as the sampler gave only a small clue towards the larger experience! I love samplers for that reason, but to often you feel like your itching to hear the story in full!
What attracted me though to wanting to read this particular story is how it was set to unfold – there was something about the characters & their struggles which resonated with me. Plus, it was set against the background of the musical world – a world which has played a keenly important role in my life as life without music is not a life I wish to contemplate! I have had an ear for music since I was quite young – moving through different styles & performances each year which saw me transitioning through the decades of music as much as generations. By curating an eclectic nature of how I heard music & the various styles therein (including the Indie Music scene!) – I came to appreciate the wide interpretation of how music & the art of music can transport all of us someplace ‘new’ & wondrous.
I have read a few Musical Fiction stories in the past – finding myself drawn into how each writer contemplates the thematic of fusing music into the folds of their narrative and being thankful for the experiences I’ve been granted therein. When it came to ‘Escapement’ – I simply wanted to take the journey and see where it took me.

Hallo, Hallo dear hearts!
‘Escapement’ is a lyrically poetic novel – writ in such a lovingly unique style, you dare not retreat outside its heart for very long! It calls to you to be read and to understand how the characters within the story are pulled towards each other & how they’ve become changed through their experiences. To give you a small preview of what I shall be revealling lateron today in my full ruminative review is the following excerpt from my thoughts as I read the novel:
I truly love discovering unique voices in fiction and Kristen Wolf is my latest novelist who has found a lovely way of lyrically writing a story during the Romantic era in history which is evocative of the musical artists in her story who breathed their soul into their music whereas her heart is seen in the poetic nature of her narrative prose. It has a rhythm of its own making – a uniqueness which allows you glimpses into a person’s personality with each short sentence she creates which in of itself says more than the length it was given on the page. She has found that curious way of imparting a heap of information within the shortness of text where similar to poetry, the words and the paragraphs their contained inside feel larger than their presence.
The somberness and the eloquence of an artist in transition of the final chapter of his life – where one door is closing, the next is already open for his acceptance – is one of the most humbling openings of a novel I’ve read in quite a long time. It bespoke of the quiet solitude of appreciation someone who is at a level above the rest of his field – creating not just for the sake of leaving behind the legacy of his work but for a higher purpose where even his own talent merged with something rather extraordinary throughout his lifetime. The dedication it takes to fuell your creativity for the longevity of a career which spans more decades than most artist are given – is such a crucial way of being introduced to the legacy and the admiration of the title character within Escapement – or rather, the one character who influenced the truer lead character, Henri.
For without Cristofer, there would not be a Henri as we know them. Entreating into Henri’s life at a point where Cristofer is exiting is is an interesting segue to retreat backwards into their hours together – to move backwards to understand the forward motion of where they are now. Interesting as I hadn’t expected this to flashback as much as I thought we were going to be inserted somewhere on their path where their lives were already in-progress, as that was the first impression I had when I read about the novel prior to opening its pages.
The ways in which you move through this story are set to a very unique rhythm of delivery and I for one, am thankful for the journey I am taking as it is giving me such a wondrously illuminating read! Not to mention the fact, there is a whole undercurrent of loveliness attached to this story which evocatively takes a look at the art of the creator and how one’s quest for creative ingenuity can overtake a person’s focus, lifestyle and soul.
Music is such a passionate expression of oneself – it also transcends itself to a heightened place past conscienceness and allows us to understand things on a deeper more keener layer of awareness. I personally love how this novel was writ with such a unique voice to not just insert us into a musically creative artist but to allow us to *feel!* what it was like to be self-possessed by one’s art and to give selflessly to the pursuit of creating it.
