tCC Group Check-In #8 :February: 2014

Stepping Back into the Folds of Time | tCC

To seek out the classics, but also, to soak into their worlds, their settings, and their language. To fully become aware of the essence of why the writers’ left behind these tomes of exploration for next generations to ponder and muse upon their worth. To float through centuries and dance through literary genres whilst engaged in the craft of writing as scribed by those who came before us. – Jorie’s reason for reading the Classics February 2014

I could not get my footing in the Classics during the month of January, as I had high hopes of participating in the Wuthering Heights (#WutheringHeights) readalong via my good friend Maggie’s RAL! The chapters were evenly distributed throughout January, but what I lacked was not interest but time! Time to truly absorb myself into the flow of the story and to settle my mind into the heart of the discussions! I was reading non-stop in January, as I had quite the stacked review schedule going for blog tours, but I missed being able to grab a book at my leisure! I’m thankfully current at the moment, which is where the serendipitous offer by @RiverheadBooks (info on their RAL) to join them in a Wuthering Heights discussion between mid-to-late February & early March felt like a second chance to discuss & read this wicked classic by Emily Brontë! I will be going between the schedule for Riverhead Books & dropping in on the conversations in-progress via Maggie’s blog! Here are the following schedules for both as outlined in my blog’s sidebar:

Wuthering Heights via Maggie’s RAL:

Week 1 (Jan5-11): Chapters I-IX
Week 2 (Jan12-18): Chapters X-XVII
Week 3 (Jan19-25): Chapters XVIII-XXVI
Week 4 (Jan26-Feb1): Chapters XXVII-XXXIV (End)

Wuthering Heights via Riverhead Books RAL:

Chat #1: 21Feb
Part I: Chapters I-X
Chat #2: 28FEB
Part 1: Chapters XI- Part II: Chapter 7
Chat #3: 8MAR
Part 2: Chapters 8-20

Likewise, whilst in engaged in the Wicked Valentine Readathon I decided to pull off a book from my library shelf (borrowed through my local library vs. my personal library!) which falls under my Back to the Classics reading list! I am referring to The Ladies Paradise by Emile Zola! I consider my efforts for both tCC & Back to the Classics to be of equal measure as they sort of walk hand-in-hand with each other!

In September, I had taken upon myself to participate in Septemb-Eyre which was a RAL for reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I only managed to complete the first check-in point for Chapters I-XI, with the full intention of re-visiting the story and resuming where I had left off before the hourglass closed on 2013. However, due to life’s way of distracting our reading adventures, I never once had the pleasure of picking up the story right where Rochester starts to play a more keen part in Jane’s life! When I had first learnt of Maggie’s RAL for Wuthering Heights I felt it would due me well to resume Jane Eyre at the same time! I might be a bit behind the eightball in reading classical literature, but I am striving towards reading the stories as time allows me to absorb them! I can foresee blogging about Eyre & Wuthering Heights in repetitious succession!

Whilst engaged in a #LitChat conversation about #WarandPeace I found myself proposing the idea of joining the War and Peace Book Club via LitChat! (as mentioned in my Wicked Valentine journal entry) What I had not remembered is that I truly had included War and Peace on my tCC list! I thought for sure I had omitted its inclusion as I always felt that it would be a rather daunting book to read!

It would have been placed on my very first tCC Spin List if reading these particular classics had not knitted together when they had! I would have listed it under “Intrigued but wavering of resolve!”

And, of course imagine my surprise when I saw a tweet from the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi talking about how War and Peace would not be able to be contained inside 140 characters on Twitter!

The reason I knew I could soak into War and Peace at this particular junction is due to the fact, we’re only reading approx. 200 pages per month, whilst checking in via topics broached through LitChat’s website! I was even able to check-out the exact! same translation Ms. Sachs is using for herself! I am also reading the 1,215 pages translated by Richard Pevear & Larissa Volokhonsky! As this is what I declared to the lovely Mod for the RAL: (@DanaSachs)

You convinced me when you said “200 pages per month!”, yes I can handle that amount of reading!! I hadn’t realised you were going to break it down into something drinkable and lovely such as that! Wicked sweet! I’ll have to sort out how to make a proper blog post about this, and then, of course, I need to put myself on hold for the book! I must confess *this!* is the classic I was most akin at avoiding from reading until I was trapped inside during a raging blizzard! Mind you, I live in the perpetual sunshiny South and my days in Winter are yet to evolve into existence, but ooh! I think I always felt I needed much more ‘time’ and ‘space’ and of course, the proper ‘mind-set’ to begin War and Peace! Thank you for convincing me otherwise!! And, alas! I have not only a birthday to celebrate in June but the completion of a classic I dare not have thought possible to read by thirty-five!

I am ever so blessed to have found The Classics Club, which has led me to finding such a wonderful community of bookish souls threaded not only throughout the club but outside it; in literary circles I might not have crossed had I not the forethought and intention of reading through my classics TBR list via the Club itself! I am thankful too, that I am not the only one curious about the classics OR willing to engage in discussions about our impressions therein!

+Reading Challenge+ Seriously Series Reading Challenge, 2014!

Posted Monday, 6 January, 2014 by jorielov 0 Comments

Seriously Series Reading Challenge Hosted by Reading the ParanormalFor someone who tends to fall in love with serial fiction at the drop of a hat, it would appear that this particular reading challenge is a natural fit for me! The only bit I was worried about is if I was able to complete reading the series I only have one or two books of through my local library, but as there is a clause that states its at the readers discretion to decide how to continue onward, I will simply take the library route post haste! One day, it truly is my dearest of goals to complete my ‘sets’ of the series I am most unabashedly an appreciator of! Most will be read throughout the year in this challenge, and hopefully, as I write about them I can inspire others to take a chance on reading what I feel are stories worth exploring! Now, I best get to the particulars, setting up which series I will tackle over a twelvemonth, and JUMP IN!

General Overview: {official blurb & rules!}

How serious about series are you? We’ll find out in 2014.

In the summer of 2012, Amanda @ On a Book Bender and I hosted an informal challenge that focused on completing books in series that we owned. It was enough of a success that we decided we wanted to turn it into a year-long challenge–with a few minor changes.

Definitions:

For this challenge, a series is defined as a collection of two or more books that belong together and where the second book is published before the end of 2014. This is a pretty broad definition of series, and it includes traditional series like the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, less traditional series like Stephanie Perkins’s YA contemps (Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door), and shorter series, like Kendare Blake’s Anna series (Anna Dressed in Blood, Girl of Nightmares).

A series is considered complete in one of two ways: either as finishing all the books that you own in the series or as obtaining and reading all the books that have been published in the series to date. Because we don’t want this challenge to become a financial burden, how you choose to define completion is left to your discretion.

How It Works:

To allow for the greatest level of flexibility, we’ve separated series into three categories: series started before 2014, series started in 2014, and series rereads. Series started before 2014 are defined as series that you have started reading before Jan. 2014 and that you still have unread books to get current in (or finish) the series. Series started in 2014 are defined as any series that you start reading between Jan. and Dec. 2014, and the second book in the series must be published before December 2014.

A series reread is defined as books that are part of a series that were read before Jan. 2014 and that are reread between Jan. 2014 and Dec. 2014. A series reread does NOT have to include the full series. For each category, there are different levels of seriousness about series that you can choose. Semi-serious is reading 1 to 6 series, seriously serious is reading 7 to 12 series, super seriously serious is reading 13 to 18 series, and seriously spectacular series star is reading more than 18 series. What this ends up looking like is this:

Semi-Serious:

Series Started Before 2014: 1-6 series | Series Started in 2014: 1-6 series | Series Re-Reads: 1-6 series

Seriously Serious:

Series Started Before 2014: 7-12 series | Series Started in 2014: 7-12 series | Series Re-Reads: 7-12 series

Super Seriously Serious:

Series Started Before 2014: 13-18 series | Series Started in 2014: 13-18 series | Series Re-Reads: 13-18 series

Seriously Spectular Series Star:

Series Started Before 2014: 18+series | Series Started in 2014: 18+ series | Series Re-Reads: 18+ series

Goals and Progress:

Want to sign up? Create a post or page about this challenge, what goals you would like to accomplish (mine is here, as an example–currently, it’s my 2013 page, but it’ll switch over to the 2014 challenge in January), and then link up your post here at Reading the Paranormal. In addition to the sign up, every three months, there will be a check-in, where you can report your progress and reassess your original goals. That schedule will look like the following:

  • April 1st: January–March
  • July 1st: April–June
  • October 1st: July–September
  • January 1st, 2015: October–December

 Ready to sign up? I know I am! :)

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.comA seriously serious serial fiction reader chooses which series to read,…

Semi-Serious:

Series Started Before 2014: 1-6 series| Books in Series I Own

Each of the following series I originally started to read prior to 2014,

and in so doing, decided to start to gather the books!

  1. Aunt Dimity by Nancy Alterton | Aunt Dimity’s Death {Book One}
  2. Coffeehouse mysteries by Cleo Coyle | On What Grounds {Book One}
  3. Daughters of Boston by Julie Lessman | Complete Set*+
  4. Mary Russell by Laurie R. King | borrow through local library+
  5. Lady Emily by Tasha Alexander | borrow through local library
  6. Pink Carnation by Lauren Willig | borrow through local library

{*+} I do have the complete original trilogy “Daughters of Boston”, however, I am using this as a general series name to include the two sequel trilogies that follow suit by Ms. Lessman. The same family is included throughout the stories and timelines, but as the family grows over the generational years, as does the story! Rather than confuse the three or appear to be reading more than one singular family’s saga, I am using the original trilogy name to suffice identification! {+} I did make an enquiry if I could count series that I had started to read through my local library vs. only committing to series I had started to purchase! Thankfully, I can!

There are a heap more series, but I am not sure if I can include *all!* of them, as I am reading the ones I am thinking of rather exclusively through my library at this point in time! I might add a few series here or there, as I still have quite a few on hand, such as “Virgin River” for instance that I might elect to read as the year progresses! I might even dip into more of my 70 Authors Challenge list to even it out as well! Time will see! I am curious, which series get you excited to read in 2014!?

+Reading Challenge+ 2014 TBR Pile Challenge!

Posted Sunday, 5 January, 2014 by jorielov , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , 2 Comments

TBR Pile Challenge Hosted by Roof Beam ReaderI seriously followed this reading challenge for most of 2013 whilst I was stitching together Jorie Loves A Story! I loved the idea at the jump-start because I think any reader goes through a transitional period where the art of the gathering of books far outweighs the measuring of time towards reading the books we’ve gathered! Life can derail our plans quite spontaneously as much as we can fall out of love with a genre OR theme. Sometimes, we find books which will truly captivate our hearts, our minds, and our spirits — but perhaps the timing of their placement in our lives was wrong!? What if we needed extra! bits of time to sort through whatever we were going through in order to emerge into the very right moment! to grab said book off our shelf, dig into it, and settle into this brilliantly written story which has left us ruminatively pensive after we close the sleeves!? This is precisely why I was attracted to this particular challenge, because its such a self-revolutionary idea! To challenge ourselves to dust off the cover of a book we were always keenly mad to read, yet time distracted us. Time intervened. Now its our time to reset the boundaries of the reading spectrum and conquer reading the books we find winking at us as we walk past them!

My 2014 Shelf Selections:

  1. Larkrise to Candleford by Flora Thompson*
  2. Bluebird or the Invention of Happiness by Sheila Kohler*
  3. The Secret Papers of Madame Olivetti by Annie Vanderbilt*
  4. The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland*
  5. The Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber*
  6. Lara by Bertice Small
  7. The Beach Street Knitting Society & Yarn Club by Gil McNeil
  8. Needles and Pearls by Gil McNeil
  9. Casting Off by Nicole Dickson
  10. Deep in the Heart of Trouble by Deeanne Gist
  11. Standing in the Rainbow by Fannie Flagg
  12. Einstein by Walter Isaacson

Alternates:

  1. Eragon by Christopher Paolini
  2. Brisingr by Christopher Paolini

{*} attempted originally in Bout of Books, 8.0

You’ll notice that I am including books I originally attempted during my first Bout of Books readathon, but I didn’t actually finish the books, nor did I blog about them! Therefore, I felt they were free to be included in my 2014 selections! I most dearly want to read the stories, as my heart was intrigued during the Bout, but oh! The hours slipped through my fingers quicker than the sand in an hourglass, and *poof!* I haven’t even broached the spines once more! Imagine!? I now have a lovely year to dig into these lovely books, sort out my thoughts and impressions of them as I transition through my list, giving myself a second chance to re-affirm that you can never be too late to meet the book which has calmly sat on your shelf awaiting your proper attention!
IF your joining this challenge for the first time like I am, did you have similar motivations? Which books did you settle on? Ones that you’ve had for absolute ages and eons? Or, ones that were within the time frame of the challenge and decided to jump in on them before ‘years’ stacked distance from giving you the chance to read them?

In summary:

To read the books you’ve been bypassing on your bookshelf

& give them the attention they deserve!

Join other readers as they endeavour to do the same!

Hosted by the same blogger who brings us Austen in August!

+Reading Challenge+ Back to the Classics 2014!

Posted Sunday, 5 January, 2014 by jorielov , , , , , , , , , , 10 Comments

Hosted by Books & Chocolate karensbooksandchocolate blogspot.inOn the same vein of itching to join The Classics Club, I have been an appreciator from afar of “Back to the Classics” reading challenge, which this year, has a new hostess: Books and Chocolate! Whilst I know most are going to have cross-relating books per each challenge they commit to completing, I wanted to take a different track and pick out books that would be insular to each individual challenge! Therefore, the books you will see as my selections here will not be cross-referenced nor cross-applied to my tCC list!

Rules Specific to this Challenge: {taken from the official blurb!}

  • All books must be read in 2014.  Books started prior to January 1, 2014 are not eligible.  Reviews must be linked by December 31, 2014.
  • E-books and audiobooks are eligible! Books can count for other challenges you may be working on. However, books may NOT crossover categories within this challenge.You may NOT count the same book twice for different categories in this challenge.
  • If you do not have a blog, you may link your review from Goodreads or other publicly accessible online format.
  • Please sign up for the challenge using the linky below BEFORE MARCH 1, 2014.  Please link to your sign-up announcement post (if possible/applicable).
  • You do not have to list your books prior to starting the challenge, but it is more fun that way. :) You can always change your list at any time. You can read the books in any order (including mixing in the optional categories at any time).
  • You can decide to attempt the optional categories at any point (you can also bow out of the optional categories at any point as well).
  • Please identify the categories you’ve read in your wrap-up post so that I can easily add up your entries for the prize drawing! Adding links within the post would also be greatly appreciated.
  • Main Stipulation: *ALL* stories read are only considered a ‘classic’ if published prior to 1964!

Required:

  1. A 20th Century Classic
  2. A 19th Century Classic
  3. A Classic by a Woman Author
  4. A Classic in TranslationIf English is not your primary language, then books originally published in English are acceptable.  You could also read the book in its original language if you are willing and able to do so.
  5. A Classic About War2014 will be the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I.  Any book relating to a war is fine — WWI, WWII, the French Revolution, the War of the Worlds — your choice.
  6. A Classic by an Author Who Is New To You This can be any author whose works you have not read before.  It doesn’t necessarily have to be an author you’ve never heard of.
Optional Categories:
  1. An American Classic
  2. A Classic Mystery, Suspense or Thriller
  3. A Historical Fiction Classic. This is any classic set at least 50 years before the time when it was written. For example, Margaret Mitchell published Gone with the Wind 70 years after the end of the Civil War; therefore, it is considered a historical novel. A Tale of Two Cities and The Scarlet Letter are also historical novels. However, older classicsset during the period in which they were writtenare not considered historical; for example, the novels of Jane Austen.
  4. A Classic That’s Been Adapted Into a Movie or TV Series.  Any period, any genre!  This is practically a free choice category.  However, it’s a separate category than the required categories.
  5. Extra Fun Category:  Write a Review of the Movie or TV Series adapted from Optional Category #4.  This should be some kind of posting reviewing the book read for the previous optional category above.  It can be any adaptation — does not have to be adapted before 1964.  For example, if you chose Pride and Prejudice as your the optional classic above,you could review any adaptation — 1940, 1980, 1995, 2005, etc. These two optional categories go together, but this must be a separate blog posting — no fair just mentioning it in the book review!

Shabby Blogs

And, Jorie’s choices are as follows:

Curious or no, there appears to be a slight bent towards reading classical crime fiction this year, as nearly every single book which leapt out at me to read falls under this particular category of fiction! I have wanted to focus on classical noir fiction as well as crime, but sometimes I suppose the day you set down to write down a list for reading challenge, you can surprise yourself by your responses to the ‘fill-in-the-blank’ spaces!! Alas, the Hitchcokian girl is showing her preference for suspense!

Required:

  1. A 20th Century Classic:
    The Poisoned Chocolates Case by Anthony Berkeley Cox {1929}

    {classic detective fiction}
  2. A 19th Century Classic: *The Way We Live Now* by Anthony Trollope (considering)
  3. A Classic by a Woman Author:
    The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson {1959}
  4. A Classic in Translation: {reading in January!}
    “Au Bonhear des Dames” | The Ladies Paradise by Emile Zola {1883}*
  5. A Classic About War:
    The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers {1903}
    {influenced espionage & spy fiction}
  6. A Classic by an Author Who Is New To You:
    Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith {1950}

{*} By a sweet happy coincidence, I happened to have placed a purchase request for “The Ladies Paradise” prior to joining Back to the Classics! I hadn’t connected the dots to the book and author, until Karen kindly left me a note on this post! You see, I was wrapped up in the memory of seeing Episode 3 I believe it was on Masterpiece Theater!? I hadn’t realised a new BBC drama was already in-progress, and whilst recognising the quality, I immediately looked up the drama after the episode concluded! This led me to realise that we didn’t have a copy of this book in our card catalogue (hence the request!)!! Quite a fortuitous strike of luck, eh?

  1. An American Classic:
    The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain {1934}
  2. A Classic Mystery, Suspense or Thriller:
    The Ambassadors by Henry James {1903}
    {inspired: The Talented Mr. Ripley}
  3. A Historical Fiction Classic:
    The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thorton Wilder {1927}
    {takes place in 1714}
  4. A Classic That’s Been Adapted Into a Movie or TV Series: The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith {1955}
  5. Extra Fun Category:  Write a Review of the Movie or TV Series adapted from Optional Category #4: The Talented Mr. Ripley {starring Matt Damon, 1999}

You have until 30 November 2013 to add your declaration post to count in the tally for the year! The way in which you know your such a reader is by noting the following:

  • Easy as Pie: {1-5 Challenges, entered + completed}
  • On the Roof: {6-10 Challenges, entered + completed}
  • In Flight: {11-15 Challenges, entered + completed}
  • Out of This World: 16+ Challenges, entered + completed}

From August to December 2013, I attempted like mad to achieve “On the Roof” status in this lovely Challenge! However, the hours elapsed far faster than my ability to read & complete the challenges prior to the beginning of 2014! Therefore, I am not only finishing! the previous challenges, but I am starting anew in 2014 with a clean slate as well! :) Follow my crazy-adventure as one girl inspires herself to read and dare to explore the intriguing worlds that each book leaves me in wanton for more! :)

What about you!? Are you addicted and afflicted by reading, too!!??!
