Today’s cover reveal features the second book in the Road Ghosts series, starring ghost hunters Brett and Liz, along with good ole “Uncle Gonzo”. This time, instead of being chased by ghosts, they’re on a cross-country race to save a poor little ghoul who’s been kidnapped. Lots of surprises await, including Vampire LARPers (live action role players) on a beach!
This book also features the début appearance of Skye,
the main character of the spinoff series Tipsy Fairy Tales
(to be published by SSP in 2014/2015).
The artwork was created by the award-winning Bonnie Wasson,
who has been the artist for covers and interiors on the Road Ghosts series.

Did you see the mirror-image reflection of the ghoul?

What thoughts came to mind as to explain the hidden depths of truth

revealed in that one snapshot of proof?

This is another example of why I appreciate the illustrators of Seventh Star Press! They intrigue your curiosity to venture ‘into the story’ by giving a cursory glimpse of what you dare to find inside, once you allow your eyes to sink into the story which awaits you!

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.comSynopsis of Book Two {Sinking Down} of the Road Ghosts series:

Poor Little Ghoul

Paranormal investigators Brett and Liz find themselves back in over
their heads when a forest hunt for a roadkill-eating creature offers up
a little surprise. Back home with their ghoulish house guest, it becomes
clear there’s more to this investigation than either of them thought.
Worse than that, Brett’s own fate is linked to the little ghoul’s.

So it’s back out on the road, with plenty of time for pit stops with a
greedy ex, a convention of ghost hunters, partying with fake vampires,
and even drinking and fighting alongside good ole Uncle Gonzo. But as
the investigation goes deeper, and unseen connections come to light,
Brett finds there’s much more at stake than getting through a rough
patch with Liz.

A rescue mission. A race for a cure. New friends and old adversaries.
Unbreakable bonds and supernatural danger. It’s going to be a wild ride.
Can the friends save the nearly undead tween? Can she and Brett stop
themselves from …Sinking Down?

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.comAfterthoughts of the Chamber:

As I was saying during the podcast, there are moments in our reading lives where we read about the premise of a story thinking that we are not going to have a genuine resonance with a particular book or author. Only to have our perception of what could be inside of a book change, whilst we’re given the opportunity to become further acquainted with said author. For me, I started to dig a bit into the ‘writer’ of Mr. Garrison via his personal blog, whereupon I learnt key insights into how much heart and wickedly cheeky humour he stitches into his stories! My first impression of a story isn’t always bang-on, and I purposely keep an open mind & ear for a day to come along to where I might re-visit a book &/or author I had previously taken a pass on being introduced too! One day I look forward to giving his first “Road Ghosts” book “Four Til’ Late” a bit of a whirl, seeing where the story inspired to take him as it hinges to fond memories & an admiration of who originally inspired him to take up his pen! As much as a bit of a smirking nod to his wife, of whom shares his passion for ghost hunting and paranormal investigations! What more can you hope for? Then, a road trek which leads you into the paranormal! Writ by an author who gives a proper nodding to the creatives who came before him as much as tapping into the museful realm of dreamscapes, by which all writers aspire to draw out a measure of creativity!

Footnote: I’ve kept this post in-tact as it was written originally however, the author is now known as E. Chris Garrison or Ms Chris as I refer to her on my blog posts wherein I am featuring one of her stories or hosting her as a guest author. The reason I kept this post in-tact is because I wanted to keep the memory of how our paths crossed and remember why saying ‘Mr Garrison’ was not quite as endearing as I had meant it to be as this was before I realised he was a she. Since that day, I’ve referred to the author respectfully as Ms Chris but acknowledge there was a time I did not realise she was transgender as I was not privy to that information when we first went live on The Star Chamber Show. I am a big supporter of Ms Chris and I cherish the memories of how we originally formed our friendship, even if as said, back then, I was missing an important bit of knowledge.

I’ve updated the biography for my review of “Blue Spirit” replacing the old biography you see on this post. All my reviews moving forward will be with Ms Chris’s biography as this biography is of her previous pen name and not her real name as reflected on all my future posts. This will include my reviews of “Restless Spirit” and the Trans-Continental series during Sci Fi November 2016, as well as all forthcoming releases I will be reading or reviewing. I did switch over to calling her Ms Chris when I reviewed her short story within the anthology “A Chimerical World: Tales of the Seelie Court” as that was the earliest time I could share what I knew about the author’s transition.

Blessedly tonight, I learnt via the author’s website (see this post) both Seventh Star Press and Hydra Publications are going to re-release Ms Chris’s series with the new biography and name change on the covers to reflect the author’s lineage of stories as her authentic self. I was overjoyed when I found out about this as I was hoping this could be done as it felt right to have the covers and interior biographies updated. This is why I respected Ms Chris and left her old pen name off my blog – except for this post. It’s a deadname on #JLASblog – except our path crossing on The Star Chamber Show. I’ll always hold that moment as a treasured joy, as I loved our conversation. It was one of my favourite memories as a guest outside of the Christmas Show where I conversed with Mr Allen.

Speaking of which, we each updated our Twitter accounts – as I just noticed I still have links to my original Twitter ID on my blog! lol What an incredible three years… I really should write down the fond memories I’ve had as a book blogger, there are so many lovely moments of joy I’ve been blessed to embrace and experience. My blog itself is a footprint of my travels but I have a reserve of memories and moments I think I should work on chronicling during my next year as a blogger offline – as a way to journal my path and remember everything that’s become a part of my life since I took that leap and blogged my first review.

  1. I am glad you took the time to get to know me better. I am not shy about talking about my stories. I think every writer puts a bit of his or her own self into stories. It’s definitely true for me, I channel emotion or memories into my writing as I go, it’s what gives me the passion to tell these stories. I am telling you a bit about me even as I tell a completely unrelated story. I may have characters who curse and drink, but they’re good people who value friendship and love, and who can see anything through if they stick together.

As I wrote it, Sinking Down was very much about body vs spirit and letting go of negativity to be stronger. It’s told in a series of mishaps, cross-country car chases, encounters with ghosts and experiencing the shadow world they inhabit all too directly. The characters aren’t superheroic, they are web developers, pizza delivery people, IT workers, roleplayers, and paranormal enthusiasts. Ordinary people encounter extraordinary situations and it brings out the best (or worst) in them.

Let’s chat again soon. Thanks again for talking with me on Twitter and on the podcast, Ms. Jorie. I hope you like my stories.

    Cheers,

    Eric Garrison

    • Mr. Garrison,

I think you have a wicked way of describing your stories whilst engaged in conversations which endear a reader to read them moreso than what can sometimes be gleamed from the premise of the books! I think its because the premise is written in such a way where it is elusive of the heart of what you knit into the stories — your eloquence of connecting elements of your personal life & how those elements fuse into your writing life is enticing for a reader! (such as I) However, I remember when I first read the premise for “Four Til’ Late”, thinking it was heading in a completely different direction! Far more on leaning on satire than character arc journey! I like your inclusion of a deeper message and meaning behind the motivations of your characters & of the journey they take in the “Road Ghosts” series!! Its a ‘more than meets the eye’ series for sure!

This might not have been seen (as foresaid) if I hadn’t been curious to get to know a bit more about you! Initially at first due to our interactions in the Twitter Chat Parties, but further still, whilst knowing we would be on the same Star Chamber episode! :)

I might have made a bit of a glitch in explaining my issues with vulgarity – as I did strive to acknowledge (on the podcast) that if a writer believes strongly in his characters’ expressions are fit to be flavourful, then I always meet them half-way and respect the choice. My main issue is when the level of vulgarity increases past a point of tolerance (we all have our own barometer!) to where either the vulgarity supersedes what I accept as creative liberty on the author’s behalf OR of what I am willing to respect as a character’s mannerisms. I’m not a girl who lives in a bubble, so although I personally do not use flavourful language, (that’s my individual choice) I do not allow my own personal feelings circumvent my ability to understand a writer’s instincts & choices. (see my review of “Virtual Blue”)*

*I was direct referencing Mr. Sullivan on the podcast! :)

In which, I knew based on what I had read of your level of character stitchings, that your stories could be the exceptions of this rule! :)

I do agree that each writer finds ways to impart fingerprints of themselves in the words and narratives they create. We are leaving behind legacies of who we were whilst we lived. Where our curated experiences take on new dimensions in story-form than as they were originally when we took our journey!

I’d welcome a chance to speak to you again on the podcast &/or in a Twitter Chat Party! :)

Thank you for giving so much to this post!
It was an honour to have your drop by for a conversation!

I hope too, I have explained myself a bit better so that you know what I had meant whilst I was talking live on the podcast! I’d rather not have this misunderstood.

      • Dear Jorie,

I just read your review, and the “Fly in the ointment” part suggests that it’s possible you may have similar misgivings if you read my Road Ghosts books.

RJ Sullivan and I have shared characters and world building between our books (for example, Skye in Virtual Blue is on loan from my upcoming Tipsy Fairy Tales, which begins with the formerly self-published Blue Spirit). The reason for that is that RJ and I have discovered we have very similar styles of writing.

If anything, one of the characters in my Road Ghosts novels is more cheerfully vulgar than anything I remember from Virtual Blue. His horror tends to get more visceral than mine, but in my Road Ghosts books at least, the language can be coarser than RJ’s style.

Actually, I just went back and did a search on the F word, and it looks like he matches me F for F, so if you made it past Virtual Blue’s “blue” language, you may just like my books anyway. :)

It does depend heavily on character. I did a count of curse words in my various novels and while there are a lot in the Road Ghosts books, there are somewhat fewer in Blue Spirit (maybe even less by the time it goes through more rounds of editing) and virtually none in my science fiction novel Reality Check.

        I am rambling, I think. :)

        Cheers!

        Eric Garrison

        • Mr. Garrison,

I want to THANK YOU for your openness and honesty throughout this discussion thread! :) In which I do not think you will be too surprised for me to express my interest in “Reality Check” over the “Road Ghosts” series! As you see, my own bone of contention with vulgarity stems directly into the heart of how I was brought up and which words of cursing were considered the worst of the worst; you hit the nail on the head of my top level vulgar word of disinterest!

Having said that, as I may or may not have expressed in the podcast, but have expressed under “My Bookish Life” (hugged into my Review Policy) when it comes to choosing review books, I do the best I can whilst I am researching the book in question, yet I might wander outside the breadth of what I would generally read &/or internalise. (as that is another key component of my reading life! choosing what to put into my heart, mind, and spirit) IF I am choosing a book to read for pleasure, I may not be as open to follow a story where it leads me. Theoretically, I do not write posts about *every!* book I read, but rather select the books which have given me something I was not expecting to find when I first chose them! A rumination of an experience I was blessed to encounter and uncover!

I can say, that my attribute of whom to thank for the ‘best bits of Skye’ were a bit short-changed, as I was in the dark about your co-authoring of her character! Please know that I will from today forward extend credit for Skye to you & Mr. Sullivan rather than one or the other! :)

You weren’t rambling and even if you were, I encourage hearty discussions on my blog! I believe the only true way forward is through conversations and honesty; sharing our thoughts, murmurings, and opinions… rooting out our common ground and the connecting threads that bring us together! :) Which is why in a second from now I will be opening this up to those in the land of Twitter! :)

I yield to your wisdom in advising me of what I’d find inside your books, and will seek out instead your solo science fiction novel!! Thank you for your ability to find a story of yours which would appeal to every reader who crosses your path, even if the reader isn’t as keen to read the most popular of your works. In this, I tip my hat to you!

          • At first I hesitated to click-over to see what you had written!

            Dear Mr. Garrison,

I appreciate you continued what we had begun here and simply expanded on it from the point-of-view of a writer who elects to write differently than me, but remains true to his character’s voices. This is something I will always respect, as I’ve attempted to explain. I think if your readers & mine were to click between our posts, they would enjoy the lively but tactful discussion that I have enjoyed with you! Thank you for allowing such a serious discussion to have merit by allowing it to include two distinctive points of view! This goes a long way with me, in case you were curious!

            Now then!

IF you came across this blog post first, please continue to read about “Vulgarity & Literature” over on Mr. Garrison’s blog! As he brought up a keen insight: He wasn’t even aware of the frequency of expletives in his own writings until he did a grid-cross comparison! Pensively museful I am reading this revelation!

    • Your very welcome, Mr. Garrison!

As you will soon see (or you have already) I have been tweeting notes of gratitude to you, The Star Chamber show hosts, & to the listening audience in general! I had an absolute fantastic time, and I am thankful it will not be a ‘one-off’ as Ms. Janel is already in talks with Mr. Zimmer to plan for a special discussion on women & genre readings! I am ever so thankful I first took the opportunity to join the Seventh Star Press family back in September, as it has opened doors and horizons to me that might not have been available! Meeting you tonight on the show was a pure joy and highlight of my evening! And, I stand by what I said, you surprised me with your depth and heart in your stories — I didn’t quite understand what your stories were about, and I hesitated to read them as I was unsure. Reading can be a learning curve – sometimes you have to take a second look and/or you have to interact with the author directly (i.e. a wicked sweet podcast (smiles) or a live author event IRL or online!). I look forward to having the chance to read your Road Ghosts series, but for now, I am thankful I could be a part of your second in series book cover reveal to coordinate with your debut (& mine!) on The Star Chamber Show!! :)

As foresaid, I am highly selective of not only the books I choose to review but in selecting which authors & book cover reveals to promote! You made the cut all the way through! :) I, too, look forward to our future conversations! Wicked sweet, Mr. Garrison! Have a lovely night!
