It isn’t everyday a bookish foodie like me has the honour of interviewing such a warm and engaging cookbook author such as Ms Oliverio! I felt a connection to her cookbook Crave. Eat. Heal. from the moment I first started to read about it’s premise, as it’s not a secret of mine to return back to being a veghead vegan! I openly discuss where I am right now on my path as an omnivore and how I very much seek the hours in the future to where I can return to living off of farm fresh fruit and veg, whilst returning to a lifestyle which is a solace to my soul. I mirror my reasons for appreciating a lifestyle of whole foods and locally sourced produce as Ms Oliverio — eating healthier in a manner that is both harmonic to the natural environ and the rhythm of your own body is the best way to seek wellness because your eating towards what enlivens your own spirit.
I love being able to gather together books to review and showcase as much as the writers who pen them to offer a topical conversation on cookery and ambrosial delights because at the heart of my bookish soul lies a foodie whose breaking into her own rockin’ confidence in the kitchen! I love engaging with people about a variety of subjects inter-related to the bookish culture we all enjoy residing inside however, when I took up the conversation with Ms Oliverio, I wanted to keep our conversation ‘food centric’ and imperative to the pursuit of eating well and thriving as we progress forward on our own individual journey.
I am itching to read Crave. Eat. Heal. as the print edition will be arriving next month which gave me plenty of time to dream about what I’d find inside it’s chapters — to quay my curiosity, I delighted in the joy of finding a happy conversationalist to converse with for today’s tour stop! I hope dear hearts, you find equal joy in reading it!

Crave Eat Heal by Annie OliverioAfter struggling for many years with a raging sweet tooth and emotionally-driven cravings, author Annie Oliverio began the journey back to a healthy, balanced palate. This is a cookbook focused on plant-based foods that protect, nourish, and heal – yet satisfy “cravings” that can easily trip one up when striving to eat healthier foods or when feeling lonely, stressed or in the need of comfort.

Blog Book Tour | “Daily Tortilla” by Ricardo James

Cookery Delights | Savoury & Ambrosial | Cookbook reviews by the Bookish Foodie Banner created by Jorie in Canva. Photo Credit: Unsplash Public Domain Photographer Monstruo Estudio.

Acquired Book By: I am a regular tour hostess for blog tours via Cedar Fort whereupon I am thankful to have such a diverse amount of novels and non-fiction titles to choose amongst to host. I received a complimentary copy of “Daily Tortilla” direct from the publisher Front Table Books (imprint of Cedar Fort, Inc) in exchange for an honest review. I did not receive compensation for my opinions or thoughts shared herein.

Inspired to Read:

I have revealed bits and bobbles of insight of my adventures down in Mexico previously, as I recollected different aspects of my time exploring Mayan ruins, the Federal District (Mexico City), and the Yucatan; however, I am unsure if I ever clearly expressed how life-affirming and changing the journey of eight days with a sponsored trip for American teenagers truly proved to be for me. I was sixteen yet I was already a seasoned traveller who ended up helping her group with such a high frequency, I never considered myself ‘chaperoned’ because the roles were in reverse! I didn’t catch-on to learning Spanish in school (courtesy of being dyslexic with a syntax issue with a romantic language) yet what proved to be more efficient was knowing English, with an alert mind, and an eye for understanding the food, culture, and history of a country your visiting.

I had friends who took mission trips with their Lutheran churches who returnt not quite as wholly enthused as I had myself – to be honest, I did not stop dreaming of walking around the ruins of Uxmal for at least a few years, and even found my poetry igniting with ruminations of my time being ‘there’. I grew up in a multi-diverse (both culturally, religious, and ethnic) city where you have as many different denominations of faith and religion as you have cultural heritage inside restaurants and eateries. My favourite ‘big event’ was held at the convention center where you get to ‘walk around the world’ for a day, eating different foods (oh, yes even in elementary and middle school I was a ‘foodie’ at heart) whilst conversing with the people who were hosting the booths. I talked the most, enquired the most, and basically took getting my ‘passport’ stamped quite seriously! I didn’t just want to ‘walk through’ the moment, I wanted to live it, breathe it, and taste it too! I have a heap of fond memories from this faire but being in Mexico changed my life.

I didn’t take a mission trip (my churches had them, but honestly I wanted to do outreach in America which was unfortunately never an option) but what I did take was a solo journey of a teenage American who fell in love with Mexican food and cultural heritage! I loved visiting the Archaeological Museum where I learnt if I had had the ability to do this, it was only a ‘short hop and a skip’ in a chartered plane to visit a more rural ruin of the Mayans hidden within the folds of the Yucatan itself. I dreamt of taking that flight even after my time there ended and I was boarding the flight home. If only,… The flamingo dancers at the night club spoke to my dancer’s imagination — as I love performance art, theatre, and dance. The creativity and the colourful way in which stories are told through the motion and art of the music is a beautiful synchronism of eloquence.

What has withstood the most against all these years of time has been my memories — the heart memories of the foods I inhaled and consumed whilst I was living off my own moxie for staying ‘true to Mexico’ without taking any health risks like my classmate did when he picked up fruit from a roadside stand. Honestly, boys are silly sometimes to the determent of their well-being! I, meanwhile, elected to pick and choose off the menus of the different restaurants, opting for as authentically Mexican cuisine as I could afford to partake each time I ate whilst being given a crash-course in Mexican dining! I loved sorting out how to ‘order the food’ without speaking Spanish but rather sorting it out in this quasi-original way between the menu itself, my facial expressions and hand gesturing with English — personally I think it was my enthused curiosity to ‘try the foods’ which won over the chefs and wait staff!

Imagine then, my happy joy in finding “Daily Tortilla”!?

Sopes, Tamales, Pozole, Huevos Rancheros, you’ve never had Mexican food like this! Daily Tortilla starts with the basics of tortillas, beans, rice, and salsas, and then builds to an incredibly delicious repertoire of dishes found in any family dining room in Mexico. Say “adios” to Americanized Mexican food this is authentic, south-of-the-border flavor at its finest!

Blog Book Tour |”Gluten-Free on a Budget” by Chandice Probst & Tana Besendorfer #gfree for the budget conscience home cook who attempts to eat as healthy as they can!

Inspired to Read:

My review on behalf of this cookbook from Front Table Books has me quite excited because I am always on the look-out for how to make ‘Gluten-Free’ foods & sweets without breaking the budget! It was quite ironic that the author of the book added ‘budget’ into the title because I rarely say ‘breaking the bank’ and/or ‘breaking the wallet’, as I tend to talk in generalities that I think relate to everyone; so being we all have a food budget, the word felt more akin to what is relatable to me! I have some wicked awesome GF ingredients I want to use and I’m hoping I’ll be inspired to try one or two of the recipes inside! This marks my third *gf!* cookbook to review! Too exciting for words!

as shared on Jorie’s Box of Joy, No. 4

Although I was also hoping to find wicked good ‘staple recipes’ that you could sort out ahead of time, whilst having a bevy of ‘go to choices’ that could compliment any dish and/or meal you were planning to make as these are the general bits inside cooking that tend to give you the most heartache trying to sort out whilst ‘in-progress’ with a current meal! Biscuits, cookies, small cakes, or even accompaniments to a main dish are generally the tricky bits to sort out whilst you are going from cookbook to cookbook or in a last ditch effort hopping on the internet to run a ‘search’ for ‘whichever recipe you need’ at that hour it’s warranted to be found!

One thing I love about the cookbooks I’ve been discovering through Front Table Books is that they are each a piece of the overall meal planning puzzle! Let me explain after I give you an introduction to what you can find inside the book:

Inspired to Read:

Originally, I had mistakenly thought this was a baking book devouted to cookies, bars, cakes, pies, and all the lovely homemade snacks or deserts a person would love to make ‘sugar-free’ or with sweeteners whose glycemic index is low (even for non-diabetics who want to monitor their sugar intakes); however, somehow I made a bit of a gaffe in not realising this was a bonefide cookbook full of traditional savoury foods you can modify for your health-conscience diet!

My father’s health has been afflicted for over a year due to different factors affecting his wellness, but the last of which had a major part in his day-to-day observations was how sugar was projecting an impact on his blood pressure. For this reason, we were absolute hawks, trying to sort out how to temper the sugar being consumed yet being mindful of alternative ways in which to sweeten his life a bit as my Dad has had a sweet tooth since before I was bourne! This is one main reason I was keenly interested in Sugar-Free Mom from the first moment I started to read about it! On my previous segments of “The Bookish Foodie” wherein I have talked about my passionate love for Front Table Books cooks and the recipes they give us to try at home in our own kitchens have chronicled my own path towards wellness and my parents at the same time.

Rather than focus directly on this particular subject, I wanted to do a special spotlight focus on one recipe I had originally meant to bake during the wee hours of Christmas Eve and surprise my parents & the church pot luck (for Christmas Day community luncheon) where I took the recipe for “Gram’s Butter Balls” and with a few ingredient switches (due to budget and simply trying to use what I had on hand) I was able to create a delightfully addictive treat with a pinch of sweetness without the added worriment over how sweet the cookies could have been if I hadn’t made a few changes!

Without further adieu, here is my special focus on this recipe by which I tweeted and have blogged the journalling of trying for the first time!

About Brenda Bennett

Brenda Bennett’s passion for cooking began at the age of 5 kneeling on a chair by her grandmother’s side helping roll homemade gnocchi’s on a flour covered butcher block table. Her love affair with cooking was a mere hobby while teaching as a special educator and earning a Masters Degree in Education. After the birth of her second child, she had to give up sugar. With sear determination and a deep desire to still enjoy chocolate, her love affair with food embarked on a new journey learning to develop recipes free of refined sugars and flours. After discovering peanut ,tree nut and soy allergies in 2 of her 3 children making homemade healthier versions of the treats they loved became a necessity. She transitioned to the position of homeschooling mom of 3, recipe developer, food writer, photographer and blogger. She focuses on wholesome delicious food free of processed flours and sugars to feed her family and share with friends and fans on www.sugarfreemom.com. She lives in RI with her husband, 3 children and their dog, Ruby. Inspired to Read:

Ever since I was properly introduced to the budget friendly, wicked delish and beyond brilliant recipes within Silbaugh’s Gluten-Free Made Easy I have become a dedicated appreciator of her cookbooks! Everyone has a budget but what I appreciate with Silbaugh’s approach is that she matches my own family’s belief that wicked quality food doesn’t have to break your wallet! You can eat healthy yet keep mindful of using less ingredients or supplementing what you need with what you have on hand already and create a dish to savour! I love this the most about her cookbooks because I think at some point everyone is going to be touched by an economic crisis of one shape or another due to the changing environment of the economy (not just limited to those of us stateside!). Why not become a champion of the cookbook writers who are giving us tips, tricks, and wicked sweet insights on how to create smashingly delish recipes without the worriment over never having ‘enough ingredients’ to pull off a delightful meal?

A cookbook for every singleton who is a romantic at heart:

An insightful clue how I’m a Romantic at my core is the fact one of my favourite genres to devour are within the “Romance” section of any bookshoppe or literary realm of delightful joy! If you have dropped by on Twitter during one of my #ChocLitSaturdays chats OR have seen how many ChocLit books I’ve read in 2014, you might have gained a bit of a clue too! However, what truly perked my ears to read this particular cookbook is the fact it specifically encourages you to create wicked awesome gourmet meals for two foodies who want to dine well but keep within their food budgets! Ms. Silbaugh was inspired to create this one as an empty-nester but I found inspiration as a singleton who is optimistic about her future (read my thoughts on my review of The Language of Hoofbeats). I love discovering new recipes with full-on flavour profiles intermixed with ingredients which are easy to locate locally and do not require living in a specific geographic location! Sometimes what irks me about professional cooks (i.e. I am referring to celebrity chefs on the telly!) is they have the tendency to forget half of us who are home cooks do not live in an urban metropolis where every unique ingredient known to man is obtainable. Therefore, even though I love to cook Indian dishes alongside Italian, or intermix the two completely (hey! sometimes you have to work with what you have in your cupboards, fridge, and pantry!), I have a passionate preference for finding ways to cook gourmet with everyday resources which can inspire a savoury meal experience!

Interlocked with every recipe inside this tome of knowledge for herbivores, omnivores, and the dedicated carnivore (I should mention Pescetarians would be happy too!) you will find notes on how to spice up your Romance by giving key examples of how you can ignite a bit of passion and love into your dining. If that is not inspiring enough, you have a feast for the eyes with the larger than life photographs which showcase (and whet your palette!) the dishes themselves! Whomever does the photography for the Front Table Books line of cooking and baking books is rock solid on delivery! I am never disappointed as they have clarity of focus with the joy of feeling as though you could lift the food off the page itself! Yum, yum, yum!

Jorie is not always the best time planner : therefore this is a list of must cook specialties!

If you hadn’t noticed, I truly have the best of intentions, but my delivery is not always on par with my plans, as I simply had time whittle away from me! I wasn’t able to grab the ingredients I did not have on hand in time to prepare any of the lovelies which inspired me to write a list of ‘must cook specalities’ found inside Gourmet Cooking for Two! Alas, this simply means a lot of future blog posts sprinkled throughout 2015! If you hadn’t previously clicked over to my Story Vault, scrolling until you see the category “Cookery: Savoury & Baking (with a healthy bent of focus)” you’ll be plumb excited about the possibilities once you do! Per each review, I give a list of what I am planning on cooking and featuring on Jorie Loves A Story! If you start to follow me on Twitter (be sure to comment in the threads below or tweet me when you do!) you’ll start to notice the cookery & foodie tweets flying around like mad crazy! Laughs.
