Acquired Book By: I am a regular tour hostess for blog tours via Cedar Fort whereupon I am thankful to have such a diverse amount of novels and non-fiction titles to choose amongst to host. I received a complimentary copy of “NOURISH” direct from the publisher Front Table Books (imprint of Cedar Fort, Inc) in exchange for an honest review. I did not receive compensation for my opinions or thoughts shared herein.

Why I positively *LOVE!* Front Table Books!:

Front Table Books creates visually appealing cookbooks, in a super portable size with amazing in-line features such as crisp and clean food photography, styling the recipes to be representative in real-world relate-ability! These are the kinds of pictures you want to reach through the page, grab the plate of food, and enjoy a good nosh! The sections of interest in-between the recipes have cunningly tasty samples of the foods you can create with the ingredients you’ve already might have selected from the in-front guide provided by the author.

I might not judge books by their covers (read this tweet) but when it comes to cooking & baking, I find photographs help me envision what the ingredients are trying to tell me will be the end product. I am not naturally akin to the kitchen arts as my Mum, as I side-stepped into it as her sous chef, but somewhere between my late twenties and mid thirties, I’ve started to come into my own. I never even collected cookbooks with a zest for self-motivated exploration until this same time frame as it all began with the Vegan Soul Kitchen by Bryant Terry (synopsis on author’s site). His soulful approach to curating this passionate connection between food, heart, and soul through the comforting foods that can give us solace and joy was a turning point for me.

Ever since then, I’ve been a bit more in-step with my Mum’s pursuit of seeking out wicked quality cookbooks for #healthyeats in combination of living foods, whole grains, (local) farm fresh fruit & veg staples (by eating through the seasons vs going against them), and seeking out the alternative lifestyle choices in eating via vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and macrobiotic practices in a self-guided wellness pursuit of harmonic bliss. The attributes of natural living and green sustainability practices to cut down the footprint of commericalised veg production walks hand in hand with seeking a route that is right for your family and stepping outside the box of where others walk.

Stumbling across Cedar Fort Publishing & Media became a godsend in so many interconnected ways, as it opened up the door to discovering a wide net of debut novelists and established story-tellers, but concurrent to that, it allowed me the grace of seeking out cookbooks and books on bakery delights to finally seek out my own path towards establishing my own foodie style in the kitchen. I have a small tome of cookbooks whose authors have given me a heap of joy in reading their books, but moreso even than the joy, is recognising even late bloomers in the kitchen like Julia Child and I, can start to walk confidently when we find a collective set of authors whose own lifepaths are walking side by side our own. People who have chosen to seek out healthy alternatives and a way of how to thrive on food that is organically natural in it’s benefits and uplifting in it’s purity.

Front Table Books have editions fit for any home cook’s library as they master the cross-indexed system for easy reference and a detailed style of breaking down the bones of cooking (and baking) everyone from a newbie to a seasoned cook can enjoy using! For those who graduated out of being their family’s sous chef and have surprised themselves in wanting to take a more active role (such as I), there will be an instant appreciation for the low-yield (on your budget) ingredients to snazzy ways to stay gourmet without stretching you past your limits. Even if you are outside the economic crunch, but are seeking quality and healthy meals with a wicked sweet array of focus, Front Table Books needs to be on your radar!

IF print books provides a budget issue, you can get their releases in ebooks, however as my blog’s subtitle implies (inasmuch as my twitterverse feeds), I am a fierce advocate for local libraries. You’d be plumb surprised, but libraries do not always know which cookbooks (or fiction for that matter!) to purchase that would fill a need of their patrons. My Mum started requesting cookbooks on all the different styles of foodie culture I’ve mentioned thus far, and she received a thank you from the Acquisitions Dept. for finding the books which hold a wide appeal for others seeking the same healthy avenues as our family.

I always lament: if you cannot personally purchase book, hop over to your local library (by car or by computer) and submit a purchase request! Not only are you helping yourself, but your helping to inspire a network of like-minded readers discover what you’ve found and thereby have spread the joy of the discovery tenfold!

IF your library has the same ILL (inter-library loan) rules as mine, you can request ALL books 6mos outside of Pub! The tricky bit is with hectic lives we forget when those 6mos expire, but if your able to keep notes and track the dates to request for your ILL holds, your a surefire step ahead of me!

Most of all, if you want to read for health or for personal enjoyment, there is always a will to find a way to get the book your seeking into your hands! Ooh, I had forgotten to mention, that the largest depository of ebooks in the United States are public libraries (they even wrote an article about this recently); it might not be my route to books, but I don’t mind passing along information that helps another reader! After all, I spotlight Digital First editions of novels I eventually read in print editions!

Recipes make me giddy for cookery experimenting!

APPLE CHIPS: small confession, I have a dehydrator I have never turnt on and it’s still inside it’s box! What I liked about finding this recipe inside the book is the fact that you can use your oven in lieu of the small appliance which takes up quite a bit of counter-space! lol

AVOCADO HUMMUS: repeatedly I have spoken openly about my pure love of this little green mush of loveliness that provides such a spark of joy to eat, I could sit and consume a mass quantity once it’s created! Referring to ‘guacamole’ but equal to my affinity for that, is my LOVE of hummus! Who knew you could combine two loves and create a third?

BAKED SWEET POTATO FRIES: unsure about you, but when it comes to ‘comfort foods’ fries are at the top of the list for me, right alongside BREAD. Previously I spoke out about my yeast addiction whilst blogging about bread books, but fries — fries are quick little snacks that are fun to eat! I’ve had these out at restaurants but I haven’t come across a batch that isn’t overly cooked or greasy!

CAULIFLOWER PEPPERS: little known fact: I have loved cauliflower & broccoli since I was a kid — two of my favourite veg due to how my Mum fused spices and herbs into the heads whilst they steamed! Knowing that you can take something I already have a connection too and re-invent it a new way is pure bliss!

Which goes without question the next recipes to tempt my eyes are CAULIFLOWER TOTS + WHOLE ROASTED CAULIFLOWER!

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.comGREEN PINA COLADA, yes please! Order up! And, keep them coming! This girl is Southern bourne and the humidity is volcanic hot and wrecking on a girl’s spirits! I love ANYTHING to do with GREEN SMOOTHIES or green drinks of antioxidant / mineral / vitamin etc stimulating juice! A shot of explosive cell cleansing and clean foods to enrich your vitality is always an ace in the hole with me!

SHOESTRING GARLIC PARSNIP FRIES: next to my addiction of buying out the fresh out of the fields turnips, parsnips come in as a close second!

SPICY QUINOA CAKES + MEDITERRANEAN QUINOA WRAPS + CHEDDAR & CAULIFLOWER QUICHE W/ QUINOA + QUINOA & BLACK BEAN ENCHILADA BAKE = delights to my ears as I have come to find out that I love quinoa in all it’s varieties of variants as much as I love how you can create a meal around this ancient grain whilst having a high yield of nutrition!

THE REST OF THE LOVELIES THAT TEMPTED ME ARE: the Acai bowl, Asian Lettuce Wraps, Almond Falafel Wrap, the Raw Vegan Caprese and the Veg-Vegan Chili. I was curious about the Date Paste as a sub to sugar(s), but the deserts I keep a cautious eye on as baking up a heap of deserts is difficult in a house where everyone is all too keen to devour what is made within a day and a half of it’s arrival on a plate!

What ingredients get your heart to go aflutter with excitement!?

The hidden joys are as follows:

You get to scope out the positions of yogis whilst checking out the super comfy clothes their sporting whilst the outside photographs draw you into places where you can unwind your mind, relax your spirit, and simply ‘reconnect’ outside of the fray of your everyday life! I love the examples of how stretching and getting into a routine of ‘motion’ fitness can work itself into a framework for change. We lead sedentary lives most of the time and not for a need or want to be less active, but sometimes the hinders to get us up and out are environment or climate related, inasmuch as the feasibility to afford the necessary bits to keep exercise in our lives rather than as a future prospect of hope.

My favourite place (online) to find the sporty cosy comfort clothes as featured in NOURISH is none other than ETSY! You’d be happily surprised to learn (if you hadn’t already sorted this out!), the artisan website promoting entrepreneurship and handmade over commercially produced trades and goods, has a healthy plethora of choices for fashion! From vintage to thrifty recycled designs and modern re-innovative materials focused on natural and elementally friendly ingredients. I love the choices but mostly I love the fact your able to seek out creators of clothes who are individualistically unique and thereby offering you a free spirited chance to set the tone of your own style.

The yogis in the book have found a Tai Chi girl in Jorie – I aim to take-on Tai Chi again in the future (as my instructor retired years ago) whilst implementing swimming and Pilates. I need not only low impact routines but I need the ability to stretch and guide my body towards wellness from a higher level of motion than yoga provides. I understand the benefits of yoga, but I’m a Tai Chi girl and that’s alright with me! I still appreciate the stretching and range of motion exercises where your in a standing position (for yoga) and will see if I can get the hang of them! I do like the positions where you focus on ‘balance’ and strive to re-establish your center.

One thing I have wanted to seek out is a way to talk about what befits a book blogger’s soul – part of what makes our soul happy is the food we consume, which is why time to time I will be showcasing a healthy-minded cookbook or baking book to augment this side of my life into my book blog. For this reason, I am still quite grateful Front Table Books and Cedar Fort gave me my initial chance to feature a cookbook — as it marked a transition moment for me, as I started reviewing for their Front Table releases in 2014 whilst continuing now in 2015, I will be regularly featuring non-fiction titles as much as dipping into the Foodie Fiction section of literature which compels my heart to discover.

In conjunction with a *NEW* Feature on Jorie Loves A Story:

The Bookish Foodie a blog feature of Jorie Loves A Story

This post marks my fourth tie-in on my bookish blog where I am going to be highlighting both fiction and non-fiction Foodie delights! I have always appreciated “Foodie Fiction”, but I am also an amateur sous chef who likes to experiment in the kitchen with her Mum! I grew up with a keen interest in savory and sweet decadence from a Mum whose culinary wanderings spanned the world. We were always a family who were considered to eat ‘bland’ food due to the fact we limited our salt intact, and we never used black pepper! Ironically, it was through the herbs and spices my Mum always fused into our cooking adventures that first sparked my own interest in getting a bit more involved than merely developing a ‘taste’ for what I appreciated. I developed my own yearnings for Indian spices (i.e. Curry Powder, Garam Marsala, Turmeric, etc) and foods, as much as I always had a hankering for extra garlic cloves due to a high concentration of Italian foods I consumed growing up. I wanted to merge my bookish joy of reading ‘Foodie Fiction’ with my quest to uncover a healthier and more vibrant way to eat, live, and thrive. Therefore, I decided to begin featuring what I consider fit under this new Feature of Jorie Loves A Story: The Bookish Foodie! As I am *exactly!* what the title eludes — I’m a bookish girl who has a Foodie soul! Drop back and spend time with me to see where this Feature takes me!

About jorielov

I am self-educated through local libraries and alternative education opportunities. I am a writer by trade and I cured a ten-year writer’s block by the discovery of Nanowrimo in November 2008. The event changed my life by re-establishing my muse and solidifying my path. Five years later whilst exploring the bookish blogosphere I decided to become a book blogger. I am a champion of wordsmiths who evoke a visceral experience in narrative. I write comprehensive book showcases electing to get into the heart of my reading observations. I dance through genres seeking literary enlightenment and enchantment. Starting in Autumn 2013 I became a blog book tour hostess featuring books and authors. I joined The Classics Club in January 2014 to seek out appreciators of the timeless works of literature whose breadth of scope and voice resonate with us all.

    • Thank you for this wicked awesome compliment! :)

I always strive to give a reader a strong impression of how a cookbook not only reads to me but how I can utilise the cookbook in my own cookery adventures that might inspire someone else to give it a whirl of a try too! Brilliant feedback! Blessed! Do hope you were able to find a copy! :)

    • Hallo, Pat!

Thanks for stopping by! :) I wanted to expand my thoughts on the books themselves as much as focus on the current one, because they have given me so much in such a short time frame, I wanted to help encourage others to take a chance on them! I appreciate your comment and letting me know that I’ve succeeded in that goal! I like finding new book bloggers to follow, visit, and converse with and your blog stood out to me because you are attracted to the same kinds of books I am! The Bridges of Paris book is simply a beautiful work of art and thought! I will definitely be returning back soon!
