Acquired Book By: I am a regular tour hostess for blog tours via Cedar Fort whereupon I am thankful to have such a diverse amount of novels and non-fiction titles to choose amongst to host. I received a complimentary copy of “The Quantum Deception” direct from the publisher Bonneville Books (imprint of Cedar Fort, Inc) in exchange for an honest review. I did not receive compensation for my opinions or thoughts shared herein.

Although a PDF copy of “The Quantum Breach” was given to me by a publicist at Cedar Fort, I decided to ILL (inter-library loan) the book via my local library, as by borrowing a paperback copy I could easily read more of the book than the first chapter or thereabouts. I can honestly not read a novel in digital form, as I strictly only read Chapter Samplers and/or small excerpts to garnish a feel for a story and if I would appreciate reading it. Thereby, I borrowed the first novel in the series to get a feel for Acey’s style of story-telling as much for a clue into the series itself. I was not obligated to post my impressions of the book herein nor was I compensated.

The FBI Suburban was already waiting for Tanner in the parking lot. He ran up to it just as the rear passenger door opened from the inside. Tanner jumped in and closed the door before realizing the woman sitting next to him wasn't Agent Heywood. It was Reina, dressed in a blonde wig and wearing Sara's clothes.

It took Tanner a moment to realize he was being kidnapped.

Reformed cyber hacker Tanner Stone has been living a peaceful life in Utah. But all that changes when a plane mysteriously crashes into the mountains and Tanner links the "accident" to an ingenious Chinese computer virus.

Now it's up to him to prevent that same virus from destroying the financial data of everyone in America! But with stakes so high, he's not the only one searching for answers. And some will stop at nothing to find out what Tanner knows.

This action-packed thriller with explosive twists will keep you guessing. Fast-paced and suspenseful, it will change everything you know about Internet security.

About Denver Acey

Few people understand the terrifying, yet realistic threat of computer hacking like Denver Acey. Denver has spent his entire professional career in the information technology industry where he has witnessed and even thwarted actual cybercrime. From his top-secret job working for the US government to securing computer networks at Fortune 500 companies, Denver is personally familiar with hackers and their unscrupulous activities.

But over the years, Denver has become increasingly frustrated with Hollywood’s inaccurate portrayal of cybercrime. Hackers are more intelligent and more sophisticated than simple teenagers, who guzzle down Mountain Dew while playing video games. Cybercrime is a billion-dollar business that encompasses organized crime and foreign governments. For these elite hackers, the fruits of success are iconic trademarks, innovative patents, and government secrets.

Because of his unique background, Denver decided to write a book to dispel hacking myths while highlighting the tenacity of cybercriminals. Utilizing actual computer hacking concepts and scenarios that he has experienced firsthand, Denver illustrates — in a simple way for even the non-techie to understand — how vulnerable we all are to cybercrime.

Reflections on reading The Quantum Breach:

There were portions of The Quantum Breach which did not sit as well with me as I thought they might, as part of me was in conflict with reading the novel due to the disclosures of what was being done to the lead character of Tanner Zane by his kidnappers. Ironically or not, I was aware of the fact hardly anything goes according to plan when it comes to stories of this nature, but part of me questioned why certain things were written the way in which they were or how they could have been written differently yet had the same effect on the psychological warfare for Tanner. Little bits of indifferences led me to not finish reading the first novel, but I read enough to get the particular pace and flow of Acey’s style.

I truly wanted to see how he approached the genre and how his story-telling style would affect the overall effect I had whilst reading it. Initially, I was going to overlook what bothered me in the text itself and just move forward to see how Tanner and his parents would emerge out of this ordeal; as you see, in the first story, it is not just Tanner who is kidnapped but his parents.

I do find at times a first novel is either a bit of a rough go for me to soak inside or I find it difficult to draw close to a lead character (for whichever reason). In this instance, I wanted to read the second novel to see if perhaps some of what I didn’t appreciate about the first novel might be absent in the second and/or the story itself would appeal to me more than the original. I have stepped back into series and/or picked up a second stand-alone by a novelist I was on the fence about previously; enjoying a new perspective into their writings and finding enjoyment in the pursuit. I was most curious what I’d find inside the sequel in other words!

My Review of The Quantum Deception:

The first thing I noticed is that Tanner’s surname has changed from Zane to Stone, and I was hoping Acey might stitch together pieces from the last novel into this one; I was not disappointed when I realised he was using a new identity for his job! Acey cleverly wrote in back-story continuity pieces alongside the current situation Tanner was facing, giving the reader just enough of the details needing to be known to follow the pace of the current story-line. In this, I was a grateful reader as it put a bit more distance between Breach and Deception!

I happily started to settle into this sequel as I noted Acey had shifted his method of telling the story a bit as this novel focuses more on the teamwork at a central location wherein Tanner is employed rather than having him remotely working against the clock to avoid an end result he could not comprehend possible. The back-story on this novel is clipped tightly into the narrative, giving you just enough of a vision of how counter-balanced this story is to today’s shifting environment on cyber security and the illusions of safety in a high-tech world. Acey plunges his reader straight into the nexus of sorting out how this new tragedy happened whilst attempting to determine who would cause it and why.

The dialogue of the story itself is not only up to the minute on our world today, but it has certain events mentioned to anchour you to how pivotal the information is whilst it was gathered to give gravity to the novel itself. It is hard for any writer to keep the information ‘current’ but it’s doubly hard when your talking about technology, the internet, and the line between peace and chaos. Acey excells in this installment to keep you on your toes but giving you a story that is a riveting good read! Not since I read Clancy (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series) as a teen, followed by Tag (Paul Mark Tag’s Category 5), and Quintana (Adrienne Quintana’s Eruption) most recently have I been able to break back into this genre with gusto. The latter novels were only the beginning of their respective series, and despite this being the second novel in the Morman Hacker series, it is the one I enjoy the most.

I even had the pleasure of seeing how the intensity of drama in the last novel resolved! Acey truly aced this sophomore debut and had me on pins as I dug deeper into The Quantum Deception! I even appreciated seeing where the tentacles of the evolving back-story was leading, as it was an arc of deception extending backwards and forwards between both novels as a whole. The concept was quite simple on paper, as there was a reason the new high tech super computer was in danger but it is how the intricacies started to evolve when we learnt more about who the key players were behind Tanner’s original kidnapping and where everyone has shifted forward in time to now. Even Tanner is married and expecting his first child, as there is a two year gap between Breach and Deception. The breach in of itself was only the tip of where the deception allowed the most folly to fall.

All the main characters are back but it is how they are all tied together and interacting through the thread of the story which held the most appeal for me. A strong lesson in karma about how what you first act to disrupt and deceive can have triple consequence on you in the future is definitely being portrayed as no one can honestly outrun the mistakes of their past if they haven’t corrected the errors of their ways in the present. This has been a series about redemption and the healing solace of turning your life around when things either go wrong or when your choices have taken your life down the wrong path. In this, Acey continues to paint a portrait of modern life in an evolving state of sanity, safety, and the perception of security.

My heart nearly lurched out of my chest and plummeted, until of course, I told myself to ‘breathe’! In Chapter Twenty (starting on page 109) your so close to Tanner and his wife at that point, as they have become a part of your life for the moment, it’s quite difficult to think about what is happening, and blessedly Acey has a way of releasing reader tension and anxiety in a way that allows the intensity of the moment to stay right where it needs to be placed whilst giving you ‘just enough’ of a release to let your heart reset back to a normal rhythm.

It’s a fast-action race straight to the end, in fact, it’s not until I reached page 240 when I noticed I could relax! Acey definitely won me over with The Quantum Deception not just for the command of the subject he tackled inside the story but for the clarity of writing a novel whose technology and insecurity involving encryption and cyberspace crime is acutely accurate for a conversation in today’s world.

    • Good afternoon, Mr Acey!

I was very blessed to be on your blog tour for The Quantum Deception, as it gave me a second chance to dig into your narrative voice. I must commend you for how you wrote this sequel, because to me, it far exceeds the original, as your style and pace within the novel has more clarity and fusion to a story which captured my attention and never let me go!

I also wanted to *thank you!* for how the story finds resolution, as I shared that bit in the laundry room (this won’t spoilt it for my readers, but you’ll know!) with my parents, as I found it so very incredible how everything came together in the end chapters! That one scene though truly touched my heart; it was lovely and you did something I think will touch every reader who picks up this novel! Bless you!
