4 For Friday Blitz via Chapter by Chapter for Month9Books

I was wicked happy when I found out about this special Book Spotlight arriving inside the book blogosphere for *Halloween Friday!*, as I quite literally have become quite fond of the publisher Month9Books through meeting Samantha Vérant on her Seven Letters from Paris blog tour! Lo and behold, when I found out she was publishing a Middle Grade novel entitled King of the Mutants, I was beyond impressed that she was launching her memoir & a fantasy novel at the same time! I did a bit of research on behalf of the publisher as a whole, and came to learn that they are an incredible publishing company staying on the cutting edge for Speculative Fiction releases whilst creating captivating cover art and offering such a wide variety of selections for the literary connoisseur!

I knew this would become quite a lovely surprise for those who have been following my blog for my Horror October posts this past fortnight, and wondering if I had disappeared completely! This is one special surprise I wanted to keep a secret, as I wanted to present four uniquely different suspense filled stories that I believe fit within the framework of the focus for Horror October. I love keeping my mind open to new possibilities in the different genres I dance through, yet as you will find on this post, these four novels offer something beyond unique inside their pages of wonderment!

This is the first time I am hosting on behalf of Month9Books via Chapter by Chapter, a blog tour hosting company who focuses on Young Adult, Middle Grade, & New Adult novels. And, if your curious about who Month9Books is and what their all about you might enjoy this short video:

The first book I want to highlight drew my eye into it’s heart because I have always had a soft spot for the legend behind the Phoenix inasmuch as I love to find stories that are centered around how the bird can not only transition out of death and into a rebirth of a new life emerging out of it’s own ashes but how powerfully convicting the bird is to realise that death is but a new chapter, a new beginning, and not quite the exit once forethought to exist past whence you once left where you were. I love the lore that surrounds it and how oft-times you will find a thread of narrative that fuses this lore into a backdrop focus of a fantasy novel or there is a Phoenix direct connection to a character altogether.

In this curious novel, what sparked my interest the most is the fact in this particular dialogue of the legend, Phoenix have risen into a humanoid form, breathing and living amongst us and their entire race is put on the brink of uncertainty simply because there are those who are attempting to cause them harm. I find that most curious, as why would there be a sort of bounty hunter tracking where they were and affecting their livelihoods!?  I also liked the idea behind how if the rebirth happens whilst they are living this one particular life, they have to forfeit all knowledge of this lifespan. That carries with it a heavy hearted philosophical and ethical dilemma and I was most keen on featuring this novel to see if it encouraged anyone else to want to drink in the story?

The cover art is imploring you to open the pages, the fire within the hand and the simple knowledge that a Phoenix is never quite what they seem is enough of a reason to warrant a reading!

Into the Fire by Ashelyn Drake

Book Synopsis for Into the Fire:

Seventeen-year-old Cara Tillman’s life is a perfectly normal one until Logan Schmidt moves to Ashlan Falls. Cara is inexplicably drawn to him, but she’s not exactly complaining. Logan’s like no boy she’s ever met, and he brings out a side of Cara that she isn’t used to. As the two get closer, everything is nearly perfect, and Cara looks forward to the future.

But Cara isn’t a normal girl. She’s a member of a small group of people descended from the mythical phoenix bird, and her time is running out. Rebirth is nearing, which means she’ll forget her life up to this point—she’ll forget Logan and everything they mean to one another.. But that may be the least of Cara’s problems.

A phoenix hunter is on the loose, and he’s determined to put an end to the lives of people like Cara and her family, once and for all.

Author Biography: Ashelyn Drake is a New Adult and Young Adult romance author. The beautiful part is the fact there were blog tours for each of these lovelies, and although, the blog tours have long since ended, you can follow the route via the virtual tour map by clicking on each of the tour banners I am adding underneath the novels like this one:

Into the Fire Blog Tour via Month9Books hosted by Chapter by Chapter

Not only can you can a perspective of what the readers felt whilst they were reading the novel I am highlighting today, but you can scope out wicked stellar author features such as Interviews & Guest Posts! The ones that I found most enjoyable to read on behalf of Into the Fire were the following:

Stop One:  an Author Q&A via Worlds of Fantasy & Adventure : I enjoyed learning that the impetus to create the story itself was based on an episode of Dark Shadows as that was one of the series that I always wanted to watch a bit more of! It wasn’t as difficult to get through as The Twilight Zone and a handful of others, like The Outer Limits, but it tempted you to consider possibilities that might not be readily explored elsewhere. I can see how the writer felt compelled to carry the thought forward & run with it!

Stop Two: Book Review on A Backwards Story : I must admit, I am not a fan of Twilight, so I definitely appreciated the candor & honesty this book blogger knitted into her review! I loved how she gave an honest revelation on what you would find inside on the content levels (as I oft do this myself under my ‘Fly in the Ointment’ sections; we all have our own styles of reference) but it was how she captured the joy of reading the novel that staid with me the most. Everything I was hoping would be found inside from the mythology to the everyday bits and bobbles of how a Phoenix could function & thrive; this blogger gives a strong first impression & I commend her for it!

Stop Three: Book Review on Book Raptured : I love finding other book bloggers who aren’t afraid to speak their honest feelings on a novel; even if some of their observations run against the joy they had reading it, because certain aspects of the story they had wished were either fleshed out a bit more and/or had lead in a different direction. I write my honest truth in the bones whilst I blog reviews, and as I read this review I saw the novel from a different perspective and walked away museful about what I’d find inside myself! I love championing these kinds of reviews!

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.com

The second book I want to highlight is a fantasy rooted in a historical narrative out of time and history itself; these are typically the type of books you’ll find that I regularly gravitate towards when I am blogging on book tours — there is something about wanting to delve into the farther reaches of history & time, pulling out stunningly honest and realistic stories that not only challenge your mind and heart as you read them, but they challenge everything that you knew before you picked up the book! Especially if your a history buff who simply loves to wander around the historical fiction shelves! Laughs.

This is the one novel out of the four where I felt I’d have to be in a pretty solid place emotionally to read this, as like most war dramas and historical arduous narratives, you can feel a bit bogged down by the intensity of where the writer is going to take you. After having read about the Crusades, various World War dramas, and Charlemagne I have found myself yearning to take a bit of a break from the harder hitting dramas and alight in ones that are either rooted strictly in fantasy or take on a speculative edge within the science fiction realms. I might re-visit reading this in the future, because it has a solid premise and a back-story of two brothers that I found compelling to learn more about.

The Emissary by Kristal Shaff

Book Synopsis for The Emissary:

For hundreds of years, dark clouds covered the skies of Adamah, and an ageless king ruled. Those who emerged with one of six extraordinary Shay powers were forced into the king’s army, an unmatched force with inhuman Strength, Speed, Accuracy, Perception, Empathy, and Healing. With the army behind him, the king—a man who wields all six abilities—was invincible and unquestioned in his rule. To most, serving the king was an honor. But for others, it was a fate worse than death.

When seventeen-year-old Nolan Trividar witnesses the transformation of his brother from kind to cruel after entering the king’s army, he vows never to follow the same path.

So when his own power—the Shay of Accuracy—comes upon him at the Tournament of Awakening, Nolan conceals his emergence instead of joining the king’s ranks. For years, he traitorously hides his power, pretending to be only a gifted scribe. But when Nolan comes face -to-face with a deserter, the man discovers his secret.

To evade detection and a death sentence, Nolan escapes with the deserter and flees into a night filled with dark creatures who steal both powers and souls. He joins a resistance, a village hidden deep in the forest, filled with others who secretly wield a Shay. But his peace is short-lived when they discover that the dark clouds, undead creatures, their own decreasing powers, and even the king, are all connected.

Kristal Shaff

Author Biography: Kristal Shaff grew up with books (and used to drive her mom crazy when she wouldn’t leave the library); her first job was even shelving books at the library. She loves anything creative, and you can often find her exploring strange and fantastical worlds in her choices of movies and fantasy fiction. Remember to travel through the blog tour which was held on behalf of The Emissary in order to find out more about what reader’s impressions were on behalf of the story & which author features you will find throughout the tour route which took place well ahead of this Book Blitz:

The-Emissary-Banner

The ones that I found most enjoyable to read on behalf of The Emissary were:

Stop One: Book Review on Originiquequanimity : This is why I like to visit blog tour stops, because sometimes what I think is going to be a heavy hearted read, might actually not be as bad as I forethought & it is a review like this that helps me make a better choice when choosing when to read which book that I become interested in reading next. I was thankful to see that the warfare took a second seat to the character development & that there is quite a bit of magic involved throughout as well!

Stop Two: Book Review on the A & P Book Club : I loved this blogger’s enthused celebration of taking the journey with Nolan and being able to watch him grow throughout the duration of the novel. I must confess that is one of the things I like to do myself — I get so wrapped up in where I am inside of a story, that I oft-times find myself either wanting a sequel or wishing quite fondly where I think the story could go next if a sequel is never conjured by the author. Oh yes, I love enthused book bloggers!

Stop Three: Author Interview on Beautiful Chaos : I always appreciate reading warm-hearted interviews where writers open up & share a piece of their writer’s journey. I was fascinated by the fact she was inspired by Eragon as I had marked myself down to read that particular book & series for the first time this year whilst participating in an event hosted by Roof Beam Reader. Alas, I haven’t yet found the hours I need to delve inside it, but she brought up an interesting point about when to start writing & where to find the inspiration to write initially.

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.com

The third book I want to draw to your attention is one that focuses on werewolves, which is one thread of narrative that I’ve always been a bit on pins pursuing for most of what is contained inside the synopsis! Except to say, the very last paragraph was quite intriguing for me, as I think any story that has a foundation on actual research and/or historical fact has a plausible sub-focus outside it’s own genre! The main reason I never felt akin to reading werewolves is because they always came across as aggressively brutish and aggressive — but part of me wanted to hinge the door half open in case I was finding myself in front of a story that worked against the typical werewolf story-line and begged to give readers something a bit more hearty to chew on!

I will admit, the only werewolf I think I have every even cheered for was in Harry Potter, but I am always forgetting if the werewolf was Harry’s Uncle or his teacher!? This from the girl who keeps promising herself to read the series rather than fall back on her memories of the adaptations! Of late, I have developed a keen interest in shifters (shapeshifters – why does the shorter term make me want to smile?) so I do suppose there is always a chance there is a book out there that will change your opinion on something you previously felt was not your cuppa tea! I will freely admit, this is the only book within the 4 for Friday that made me think I couldn’t handle reading it personally!

Predator by Janice Gable Bashman

Book Synopsis for Predator:

“Predator is a fast-paced, creepy page-turner! Bashman had me at the opening sentence and she’s still got me. I want more!”

Nancy Holder, New York Times Bestselling Author, The Rules

The hunt is on!

Sixteen-year-old Bree Sunderland must inject herself with an untested version of her father’s gene therapy to become a werewolf in order to stop a corrupt group of mercenaries from creating a team of unstoppable lycanthrope soldiers.

When Bree went with her scientist father to Ireland, she thought it would be a vacation to study bog bodies. She never expected to fall in love with a mysterious young Irishman and certainly never expected to become the kind of monster her father said only existed in nightmares. Dr. Sunderland discovers that lycanthropy was not a supernatural curse but rather a genetic mutation. When they return home, her dad continues his research, but the military wants to turn that research into a bio weapons program and rogue soldiers want to steal the research to turn themselves into unstoppable killing machines.

Bree’s boyfriend Liam surprises her with a visit to the United States, but there are darker surprises in store for both of them. As evil forces hunt those she loves, Bree must become an even more dangerous hunter to save them all.

Predator gives the werewolf legend a couple of new spins by introducing the Benandanti (an actual folkloric belief that certain families of Italy and Livonia were werewolves who fought against evil), as well as a modern scientific approach to mutation and the science of transgenics.

Janice Gable BashmanAuthor Biography: Janice Gable Bashman is the Bram Stoker nominated author of Wanted Undead or Alive and Predator. She is managing editor of the The Big Thrill (International Thriller Writers’ ezine).  Janice lives with her family in the Philadelphia area, where she at work on her next novel.

The blog tour will hold more delightful discoveries for you if this is the book that stood out to you on this Book Blitz showcase! Sneak away into the book blogosphere and see what you might discover on behalf of the book bloggers who took part in the blog tour! Remember to leave a note for them if you found something wicked happy to become enthused over whilst visiting them:

Predator Blog Tour via Chapter by Chapter on behalf of Month9Books

The ones that I found most enjoyable to read on behalf of Predator were the following:

Stop One: Book Review on Her Book Thoughts! : My ‘ah ha!’ moment of clarity was instantly reached as soon as I read ‘gory’ and realised my first reaction that this was more than I could hope to handle was correct! Yes, that would do it for me truly, I simply cannot handle the more gruesome visuals, and I am already a bit over me head in my forthcoming review lateron today (yes, a creepy bone-chilling review of a story for Halloween! The Ripper’s Wife) — so duly noted, Predator is simply not the book for me!

Stop Two: Guest Post on Beauty & the Bookshelf : I might not be keen to read the novel, but I am always most fascinated by the genesis of an idea, the percolation of how that seed of an idea germinates and fuses into the nexus of a writer’s imagination to create the story you can hold in your hands! In this Guest Post the author explains a lot of the historical aspects of werewolves that I must be honest never knew about previously! Quite wicked stellar! Learnt quite a heap with this post!

Stop Three: Author Interview on Opinionated Cupcakes : Isn’t that a clever name for a blog? A bit cheeky but I like quirky names that stand for something strong! If you were curious about the angle behind ‘bog bodies’ and where the author was curiously fascinated by the merging of both science and mythological lore, I think you will want to give this Interview a read! Science I am finding is making its way into a lot of Fantasy these days, and that is something I am thankful to see! Science rocks! And, bookish girls who dig science AND love to write fantasy novels? Even better! Rock on!

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.com

The fourth novel I saved for last as it is holds within it a thematic of story that is most akin to Halloween & the genre of Horror — of which I am celebrating through Horror October! I might be a Cosy Horror Girl but that doesn’t mean that certain story-lines do not interest me on a level that I sometimes do not fully understand myself! As I do like to dip into this curious genre whilst keeping myself tethered to the realms where nothing too horrific befalls the characters and where all adversity can be overcome through the light which overpowers the darkness. Having said that, this one particular book gave me the delightful joy in realising for the first time I have a beautiful post for *Halloween!* whilst celebrating new authors (to me) and giving my readers & visitors a new Indie Publisher to keep their eyes on as their new releases and backlist titles become available far and wide!

BoneSeeker Brynn Chapman

Book Synopsis for BoneSeeker:

Arabella Holmes was born different and raised different. After it became apparent she wouldn’t fit the role of a proper 1900′s lady, her father, Sherlock, called in some lingering favors, and landed her a position at the Mutter Museum. The museum was Arabella’s dream; she was to become a purveyor of abnormal science. What her father called a BoneSeeker.

Henry Watson arrives at the Mutter Museum with a double assignment–to become a finder of abnormal antiquities and to watch over and keep Arabella Holmes. An easy task, if he could only get her to speak to him instead of throwing knives in his general direction.

But this is no time for child’s play. The two teens are assigned to a most secret exploration, when the hand of a Nephilim is unearthed in upstate New York. Soon, Arabella and Henry are caught in a fight for their lives as scientific debate swirls around them. Are the bones from a Neanderthal … or are they living proof of fallen angels, who supposedly mated with humans according to ancient scrolls?

Sent to recover the skeleton, they discover they are the second team to have been deployed and the entire first team is dead. And now they must trust their instincts and rely on one another in order to survive and uncover the truth.

Brynn ChapmanAuthor Biography: Born and raised in western Pennsylvania, Brynn Chapman is the daughter of two teachers. Her writing reflects her passions: science, history and love—not necessarily in that order. In real life, the geek gene runs strong in her family, as does the Asperger’s syndrome. Her writing reflects her experience as a pediatric therapist and her interactions with society’s downtrodden. In fiction, she’s a strong believer in underdogs and happily-ever-afters. She also writes non-fiction and lectures on the subjects of autism and sensory integration and is a medical contributor to online journal The Age of Autism.

This may or may not to a surprise for my regular readers, as I haven’t yet had the chance to publish my List of Psychological Suspense & Horror Films that I Accidentally Appreciate (a story unto itself, clearly!) — but there is this crazy-scary film entitled: The Bone Collector starring Denzel Washington & Angelina Jolie, and would you believe that not only did I watch that film, but I was on the absolute edge of my seat whilst the entire film was airing on tv? I am not even sure what was the impetus to watch it, but I remember Mum wanted to find something a bit different and something with a bit more bite to it than the traditional murder mystery or police procedural. Clearly, you get far more than you could ever deem possible with that film; yet as I read the the title of this novel that film came back into my mind’s eye and I simply smiled. I smiled, because a title on a novel such as BoneSeeker makes you think that either this is a story that is going to be ghoulishly horrorific or it is going to be pleasantly suspenseful!

Don’t forget to check out the blog tour which gave readers a chance to soak inside this alluring novel & share their impressions on how the story translated to them as they read the pages beyond the compelling cover art that graces the cover:

BoneSeeker Blog Tour via Chapter by Chapter on behalf of Month9Books

The ones that I found most enjoyable to read on behalf of BoneSeeker were the following:

Stop One:  Book Review on Christy’s Cozy Corners : I’ll admit it, I love reading after canons in regards to Sherlock Holmes, my personal preferences are for the Mary Russell series by Laurie R. King & the Enola Holmes series by Nancy Springer. And, this book blogger is quite right — you cannot deviate too far in regards to Holmes, but there are a handful of writers who write after canons that I cannot say I appreciate the merit of where their pen led. I completely caught her enthused response, and that shout-out about Benedict Cumberbatch helped loads — big fan myself! Ooh, yes, I was quite right — the novel about the Phoenixes and this one about a ‘boneseeker’ were the ones that had me jazzed the most!!

Stop Two: Author Interview on Beauty & the Bookshelf : I don’t want to spoilt the surprise as I had such a fun time reading this interview, as you can tell both the author & the book blogger had a cheeky happy time exchanging the conversation! It is definitely one to read if you LOVE Sherlock Holmes!

Stop Three: Book Review on Reading Under the Stars : This book blogger goes into the depth of where the heart of the novel leads the reader; I love insightful book reviews on blog tours (as they tend to be my most favourite kind to write) and this one gives out a few cardinal elements of how the atmosphere of the story, the setting, and familiarity of whom is taking centerstage inside the novel steps out from behind the pen of the writer who breathed it into life. I liked the reflection on what gave the story dimension and how it stood out from other stories by where the layers were stitched into it’s context.

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.com

Fun Stuff for Your Blog via pureimaginationblog.com

I must admit, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be intrigued enough by the type of stories I was finding throughout my foray into Horror October, but one thing this particular event gave me is a bolster of courage to not only step outside my comfort zone & attempt to read something alternatively unique to my regular literary wanderings, but to learn a bit more about a genre I simply never explored due to my misconceptions that it would not yield anything to my liking. Had I not embarked on this journey over the past fortnight, I am not sure if these particular books would have sparked a light of interest in me either. Sometimes I find that your horizons expand the more you stay open and curious for the unexpected adventures that alight during your ordinary escapades in reading. You just never know which book, author, or book blogosphere event even will spark this curiosity that simply cannot be cured by one fortnight of a presence in your life nor can you deny the fact that you do actually appreciate a few more creatively interesting narratives past what you first felt you would!
I know I was on the fence earlier this year if Sci-Fantasy could hold my attention, and then, I met Uncovering Cobbogoth & Intangible! Who knew!? I think the best part of this Book Blitz is there is potentially a strong chance that two if not three of these novels will be finding their way onto my 2015 Horror October Reading List! I lost so many beautiful hours this year, I simply couldn’t consume all the lovelies I had picked out — I did attempt to ILL (inter-library loan) a few of the selections on this list, but my libraries have only purchased the ebook copies rather than the print editions at this point in time. I do not mind the extra wait, as once you find a story that whet’s your palette of interest, then there isn’t a definite time that would expire the pleasure of consuming it’s context! At least, not to me — I have waited so many moons to read certain books over the course of my life, that each time I find myself suspended in that waiting period, I cannot tell you how thankful I always am to find the book in my hands and a hearty appetite for what is written inside! Waiting is somethings sweeter, I think, than even always being able to read a book right at the moment of first discovery! You get to savour it, process it, and completely consume yourself with that particular vision of story craft! And, that dear hearts is always something to celebrate!
I am going to be swinging back by the tour pages I mentioned to leave my own commentary and let the book bloggers know how much I appreciated their thoughts on the novels and/or the author features they hosted for their respective blog tours. I am also going to check out more of the stops and I hope you’ll enjoy your passageway through the routes as well! Happy reading! And, may you find a few new book bloggers, authors, and novels to devour!
